Default proper winch, how many lbs?

i was just wondering what would be a proper size winch to get. all the times iv gotten my rig stuck a tow strap was used to pull it out. i dont go through any crazy mud or anything to the point were my rig will become extremely stuck. so it comes down to my question. would a 4500lbs winch be ok to use? i found one for a pretty low price and would be nice to have for the winter because i wheel alot in the snow

General rule is ATLEAST 1.5 times the weight of your rig. Typically you see 8K lbs winches being used for self recovery.

Obviously you would not want to use your 8k lbs winch to recovery a full sized dually 4x4 stuck in the mud.

hmm, so would the 4500 be a waste of money? iv never been stuck to the point were i need a winch (knock on wood) but i was just wondering since i found one so cheap if it would be ok for light recovery, say my wheeling buddy gets stuck in the snow or i get stuck in the snow and cant get a good recovery point using a tow strap would it be ok to use?

4500 would be a waste. the bare minimum I'd put on an XJ would be an 8000lbs.

a 4500lb winch would be a complete waste of money. get a MINIMUM of 8000lb. trucks weigh waaaaaaay more than you think when they are stuck.

I have a 9.5 warn on mine and it has worked wonders for me. I've seen winches burn up so I figured go big so there is less work and stress when pulling myself or others out. More expensive and maybe a bit excessive but possibly cheaper in the long run.

I wouldnt go for anything less then a 8k. Any less is only worth putting on the front of a car trailer or used to suck down the front end. If i were you, id get a Smittybilt XRC-8 $299.99.. Might be cheaper then the usual Warn, etc but they last and work just as good.
