Purchasing a JEEP from a dealer

Purchasing a JEEP from a dealer
It is a 1997 Cherokee Country, rats/mice ate at some wires to the ignition coil, A/C clutch has been wired, the only window switch that works is the drivers and the passenger side window doesn't roll down. The four wheel drive select lever is disconnected, so I couldn't even see if that worked. The spare tire is a joke since the rim is destroyed.
Besides that and a few cosmetic stuff the diffs are leaking along with the transmission and the transfer case. I'm aware of the different transfer cases, this being the Selec-Trac version, so I'm not too concerned with that since I'm a bit mechanically inclined and these look simple enough.
The only thing is he is asking $2500 for it with 205,363 miles.
What do you guys suggest as a fair offer?

Honestly, I would just avoid it all together. Especially with wiring issues, because you never know what else they chewed up. In the condition you described, and the mileage on it i'd say that thing isn't worth more then $750 or so. $2500 is just comical.

I would either run away screaming or offer a grand. This is just a headache right now and will continue to be one for the entire time you own it.

Walk away from it. Walk away and dont look back. If rats/mice ate at the engine harness, Id bet dollars to donuts they got up under the dash too. There are better vehicles out there for less, all you have to do is look. Ive messed with rat/mouse damaged vehicles. Not worth the efffort unless your gonna tear the whole truck down and rebuild it. Even then, $2500 is too much IMO.
Got my 1991 Laredo (190,000 turns on the odo) for free, so they are out there. All I have is a rear main leak and the CAD dont work.

I agree with everybody else. I bought my 97 country about a month ago for $2,000 cash and it was in PERFECT condition. Not only that, but they just spent $3,000 on a new tranny, and new tires! I searched for about a month before I found this one too. Keep looking and you'll find one!

I just paid 2400 for a 97 Country with all electricals working and no leaks, 160k, but in the year I spent searching, there's one thing I found: Dealer Jeep = Oerpriced POS that got traded in or put on the auction block for the dealer to buy it for a good reason in the first place. Also, used car dealers are ******** and ******, just as a generalization of the ones I worked with. I wouldn't bother. Craigslist it.

Honestly, I only need a truck to continue working on cars and anything else I might get into (camping, hunting, deep water ). I'd like to get something that is a bit newer than early 90's (I already own a 1989 Honda) with the stiffened chassis w/o the "improved cylinder head design". Selec-Trac is what I'm looking for, Quadra-Trac has a bit more than I need (creature comfort).
I wouldn't mind doing a bit of work on the truck to get it running right..but how much could a transfer case cost if I need one?
I also work at Advance Auto Parts, Inc. so parts will be relatively cheap for this.
My first thoughts as I got into it was..oh no, another neglected Chrysler...this is going to be a headache.
Would a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo be a good option (Slec-Trac equipped)?

NP 242 T-cases run like $400 from Jasper, mine had a new one when I bought it. I understand that you aren't looking for perfect, but that thing has "Scary" written all over it and you can do so much better for under 3k. GCs are ok.

I think I'm gonna hold onto my copper for now and keep looking around.
I'm not very interested in the GC's..coil spring in the back is great for rocks, but not for hauling (unless I'm wrong here). I'm not playing with any rocks, or just a few near the water in Virginia. My plans for this is to haul all of my tools and equipment, maybe even a trailer with my Civic.

i got my 2001 cherokee sport with 220k miles for $2750, everything works great on it, wiring issues can be a PITA with money being thrown everywhere just to figure it out, personally i would look for another deal
