If you plan on staying with 33's go to 4.56 gear ratio. If you wanna go to 35's in the future just go with 4.88's.

100% correct. I went with 4.56 when I had 33's, now I'm on 35's and really, really wish I went 4.88's. Oh well, live and learn.

Also, go with a locker in the d30 (if you have the cash) now as you need a new carrier anyways.

If I had that much of a lift and only on 33's now I can see you going to at least a 35" in the future. I had 33's with 4 1/2" lift and made the mistake of buying 4.56 gears instead of the 4.88's when I installed the gears and lockers.

The 4.88's would have been fine for the 33's and the bottom end for 4.88's buy I learned an expensive mistake by not planning ahead with no real RPM increase with the 33's over the 4.56's.

Now I have a spare set of (5) 35's on bead locks when I want to run in some areas and my grear suck. JMHD as to my poor choice where I have to buy something twice instead of the right product the first time.

Where's the best place to buy them? And how much do they usually run for?

Gear sets for miner a D30/Chy 8.25 complete with master install kits for both were $490. The gears are the same I use in my race cars the current Turbo car a 1500+HP using a transbrake no failures to date in the last 15 yrs and 11 cars. They come from Rustys Off Road and my installer told me the master install kits were top notch as well.

I had them 3 days after I ordered them from him and spoke with them on the phone during ordering process.

Just so you have an idea, if you're going to have a shop install them, expect to pay around $1400-1600.

Parts are about $500-600, labor is what kills you.

I'm setting up to install 4.56s this year with my 33s.

Yes that's one of the milder tunes, it will hold over 1800. Dart block/heads/injected/air to water intercooled. Reason for small HP numbers is that its a SBC only 421 ci.

Plenty of HP for an old guy in a small tire car. What is it that you race and where, maybe in this area sometime we might hookup.

I don't race. Just wondering because it takes big money to see those numbers reliably. And then you said rustys.

I have yet to have a single issue with any items I have ever bought from Rustys out of I guess 6k worth of items and the gears are fine. I run Ford 9" in my race cars so keep several 3rd members ready to swap depending.

As far as my engine this one is a budget motor and only 45-50k in it. I still have several extra engines that I need to sell as well as 1 car left a Mustang setup for a SBC. Main reason built this engine so cheap have lots of parts that were reused most all were NOS in the past only switched to Turbo's 8 yrs. ago new world.
