Questions on purchasing a 1985 Cherokee
I have the opportunity to buy a 1985 Jeep Cherokee 2 door Pioneer with the 2.5L inline 4 motor. Has under 60k and is overall good shape. Any thoughts or advice? Price would be under $2k

sounds good. I would take the 4 cylinder over the pitiful v6 they used back then.

The 2.5's, especially in carbureted form, are no powerhouse but they're durable and can eek out good mileage if tuned up properly. $2,000 for any XJ that runs and drives, isn't rusted or beat to pieces, and has a title seems pretty good, but pics and more details will confirm it. I'd buy a straight 2.5 2-door for that price!

Good lord I had a 2.5L 1984 XJ. WAS tough as nails but the 4 banger was completely useless in deep snow or mud. Pretty much just floored it on the highway too.
At least with the 2.8 v6 you can swap in a 3.1 fairly easily and get SOME performance.
A 2.5L XJ 4x4 would have to be CHEAP for me to purchase another one. Mine was free.
Bonus pic after I rolled on the olive-drab paint.
