Redheaded Step child.
Heck, my old 77 is a Cherokee.
Make it feel like a redheaded step child around here.
360/turbo400, Quadratrac ase, D44 front and rear, 3.55's.
my 87 next to grandpa.

Always liked the look of the older 2 door SJ's like that. I had a 79 4-door with the 360 in it years ago. Talk about a tank man...

360/727/229 case.
loved gas, 8 to 10 mpg, why i sold it.
The old chief i haven't driven to be honest needs a fuel tank, actually thinking of working on it in the spring, would like to get it where 33x12.50's fit under it.

It would be worth it... not many of them still around.... honestly I wish I still had my 79. Yeah... mileage smileage with them... but they were such beasts... I got 10 mpg whether I was just rollin' into town, or if I was towing a fully loaded trailer. That motor had enough power that it didn't change even with a loaded trailer or boat. But this was also back in the days when gas was hovering around $1ish a gallon, so that wasn't a factor back then for me.
This was years ago...I remember that the timing cover cracked and it ended up getting parked. I don't know about now, but at the time, that specific part just to get one it was like doing a deal on the black market just to find it...and were quite pricey due to the fact that if memory serves, I think it was also incorporated into the water pump housing as one piece, not 100% sure though now. So finally just sold it as it was like a 3rd or 4th vehicle at the time anyways.

yeah.... the rest of mine was also in great shape.. no dents, no rust (outside of the normal surface stuff on the axles and suspension. I don't know what made producing that specific part so damn expensive, but at the time it just wasn't worth the investment since I had 3 other vehicles that were in great shape.... but wish I had it now... lol

Are you kidding me? That thing is awesome. You have to realize I am older and grew up with all those types of Jeeps. My first when I was 16 was a '46 CJ2A. First thing me and my friends did was plunk a Buick V6 in her.

Growing up, I had a neighbor that had a 77 2-door similar to the OP's... that was awesome too... All copper color in and out..and they had taken out the orig. front seats and put in and wired up a set of plush power seats out of a caddy... man that thing road nice... I think that's where my love of Jeeps started...way back then. lol

I need a set of tires for it.
Then replace the gas tank, the stock tank is MIA someone put a GM tank of some kind in it.
A friend has a parts wagoneer in my field, and said I could get the fuel tank out of it, though not direct interchange, different year, or go with an XJ tank/skid plate and move it to the rear.

If you can use the one out of the donor, I would stay as close to stock as you can. Or if you go the XJ route for which parts are mostly avail. vs. a stock 77 like yours.... make sure the fuel pump etc. handles the right amount of PSI you need for your ol' 360, so she's not starving for fuel.
It's on my spring list to-do.
I got to many to-do list.
96 XJ back there needs built, my 87 XJ I'm working on atm it's getting a Detroit tru-trac in it tomorrow.
Then decide on how I want to do the rear.
Nice think about stock type fuel tank for the chief is it does set lower than the frame at all.

I know what it's like... seems there's always too many "to do" lists in life. Damn... lol
