Roof rack, cargo rack, cargo basket or whatever you call it
I believe my next mod is going to be a roof rack or cargo basket or roof basket whatever you call it.I'm looking to spend around 150 which Isnt much I understand but I'm on a tight budget. This means more than likely ill be shopping at 1 of the 2 favorite places I shop, Amazon and the other being Craigslist .I been checking around and it seems that I need one as close to 72x52 for what I'm going for on my Cherokee .A roof basket that goes from the front to back or as close to it as I can afford.I plan on carrying me a gas jug/jerry can for when I go on long trails. Spare parts, full size spare tire, mounting all my lights on it including the backup lights I just ordered. Shovel and everything else you need when you go on a long trip thru the mountains. I sleep inside the jeep so I really need the extra room inside plus I like taking my 5 year old son with me when I go somewhere local.I'm hoping someone can post a link to a rack for a good price. Another great link would be greatly appreciated and If I have to go smaller I will as long as I stay within budget and not to small.I have some many ideas for this XJ and so little money.I'm still waiting on my lights. I'm owned this XJ since Sunday of last week.

Best place to look is Craigslist. Unfortunately it's hard to get a link for you because the listings change daily and are different depending on location, but stay diligent. I picked up this rack via Craigslist for only $75.

I got my basket off Craigslist. You know that Walmart has roof racks for under $100?

What do you guys think of this ebay deal, and is the size appropriate or too small for an XJ ? it is 43-1/2" long and 39" wide. I have the factory bars on my 01 XJ, this looks like it would bolt right on. I also don't want gutter mount, prefer to attach to existing cross bars.

another one I'm watching which is 47" long and 40" wide:

and here's the 62-1/2" long by 45" wide basket from Discount Ramps that another poster showed off on his XJ:

I'm not equipped to make my own and can't spend $500 on a Warrior Products or Yakima rack. Thanks for your feedback or any pics you have of your racks, especially if you own one of the ones I just linked to.

Personally, I like full length roof baskets, but I think the shorter ones look fine as long as they're positioned at the back of the jeep, rather than in the front or middle...
Here's a pic of my Thule MOAB roof basket. They sell extensions for them, too, but I just have ski carriers on it and don't use it for much else...Probably out of the budget, though
