I would buy something with a salvage title but i wouldn't pay the max book value for it tho.My beater f250 was a theft recovery and had a salvage title because of it.It needed a new steering column and all the glass but i got it cheap enough to make it worth my time repairing it.One thing you might want to ask your insurance agent if you want full coverage if they will do it on a salvage title some will some won't.

All very true and things you need to check on.

I have bought and sold numerous cars, trucks, SUV's with salvage titles. I owned 3 towing companies in CO. for a number of years and will say you might very surprised at the number od 4x4's in that state with salvage titles on them as well as other states 4x4's tend to be recycled for sure. I had 5 tow lots and over the years only a very few 4x4's ever went straight to the crusher.

But never pay book on a salvage title either no matter how good it looks and very few banks will loan on them at all if they are to be used for the loan for a lien.

It all depends on the damage it received to be totaled on an XJ it takes very little for them to be and in "most" cases easy to repair

Can't get a loan, and you can't really get insuranced for it. Sounds okay until it gets totalled 3 weeks in and they will only pay out $500 on it.

Some fool in CO is selling a $50,000 sportscar with a salvage title. I bet someone will buy it too. A fool and his money are soon apart.

Does anyone pay for full coverage on an XJ, and any company will only pay out book no matter what it is a 15-20 yr. old Jeep. lol.

You live in Colorado.

The land where a 1999 V6 Mustang base model, with 150K on the clock, will sell for over $6000

Where rusted to ***** 2001 XJ's with cracked heads still sell for $5000, and where people list cars at 20% higher than KBB just because they think their neglected POS is "special" and in "great shape compared to other cars in Denver".

I am shopping for a 99-04 Mustang roller (chassis only, or with a blown motor). Found one with a blown motor, guy still wants $3700 for it because it is in "great shape" and yet the clearcoat on the roof is failing

Start looking for cars in New Mexico and Kansas, you will pay literally half the price

Looks like a clean jeep, but I would NEVER buy a rebuilt/salvage vehicle. 5k would get you a very nice, clean XJ pretty much anywhere.

Forget about that one, and move on to better things.

My xj was in a light front end collision 6 years ago. I bought it one year ago. Still has a clean title. All the body lines are correct and paint looks great. That said, when I went to pull the front bumper to install some recovery hooks, I had a major pain in getting the hooks to line up. The very front of the subframe was slightly dented in. This is definitely minor damage but just goes to show that even a slight front end collision can cause really annoying problems later. Not to mention hard to find find issues like cracked steering brace and upper track bar mounts.

I'd go with the above mentioned advice and travel a bit if you can't find a good deal locally. Texas is pretty close to CO and things pretty much don't rust there.

Also, I keep full coverage on mine, but I have USAA insurance which is dirt cheap. ~$70 a month for full coverage. Why not.

Yeah, there were some minor electrical issues, I said between those and the title its a no go. The guy said he would speak with his tech on work and pricing because of the electrical. So I'm good.

Clean as it looks and runs like a champ, but just had this "shady" feeling, and I found out of basic electrical that should have been tested; one issue is the windows acted like the window lock was permanently on...but of course when I bring it up hes oblivious to the issue lol.

Where's the rolls eyes emoji...

Thanks for your input. Just to be sure, I just checked and I pay $346 every 6 months. So less than I estimated. I keep really high coverage on my daily vehicles that transport my family. It makes sense. Have one of your loved ones involved in a crash that keeps them in the hospital for weeks or months and you'd be "raping" yourself for not keeping better coverage on your vehicle. But thanks for your opinion...

OP, the window issue you saw is a common and easily fixable problem if you do happen to encounter it in the future.

That window switch issue is no big deal. Just about all later model XJ's get that problem, and is easily fixed/bypassed.

My Jeep has a salvage title from a deer hit. It doesn't take much to salvage an older XJ, so I don't see it as a big deal as long as the price is right and the damage was just cosmetic. If it has no rust issues on the body and undercarriage, I would consider it, especially if you can talk them down on price. I wouldn't give $5k though... Did you check if the airbags were deployed? If they were, I wouldn't do the deal.
