A rebuilt or salvage title means that there was 70% or greater damage via cost to repair. Also means insurance has paid it out on the vehicle.

You were expecting a totally different response when you started this thread huh? You thought a salvage title was no big deal, posted here to try and reaffirm what you thought, and it was totally shot down haha

So much win in this thread. I feel like we're being trolled.

-I wouldn't buy it for reasons already stated
-trans in neutral is NOT how you tow a jeep
-don't be so focused on a specific list of stuff and your options open up.

S**t I can buy a practically NEW XJ (rust free, 45-75k mi) around me with a clean title for that price. Your nuts man.

I just bought an XJ I'm going to use as a base for my buggy build. The ONLY two things I was after were clean title and a good body. Took me 2 months but I found the perfect one; and even sacrificed 4x4 for it. I have to swap a tranny and transfer case but for $780 who the hell cares, it's got zero rust. Even though I'm going to cut the hell out of this thing and not even register or inspect it I wanted a clean title.

I'm not against salvage titles, but only trust my own work haha.

Thanks for posting that. Good to know the details of a particular case, with local laws. I lived in CO for 17 years, in Aurora, just by 225 and Parker Road...but I've never bought a vehicle in my life with a salvage, or otherwise, title. Matter of fact, I bought my XJ from one of those "mom and pop" lots, on Federal, close to downtown Denver. Paid $2300. Cash. Clean title. But, I went into it knowing what I was looking for (a project vehicle), and knew what I was looking at. I lurked here on the site for almost a year, and studied up on what to look for. I had ammunition, and right when I walked through the door, they knew that....A. I knew my ****, and, B. I knew what I was looking at...which meant, C. They wouldn't be taking advantage of me...told them upfront I was paying cash...but never told them how much I had. Checked it out top to bottom. Drove it. Tested EVERYTHING. Used what I found to drive the price down. They were asking $4000. Wanted to finance me for that amount. Knowing what I knew, doing what I did, and having cash in hand, I walked out the door, satisfied, and they got a car off their lot. That said, let me address your final statement of this post...

Based on what you've posted, you are young. You also stated this was your first major car purchase. Do you honestly believe you will never sell it? You may have plans of keeping it forever, but life has a funny way of throwing you a curveball at the most inopportune times. I won't go into scenarios too much, but things like medical issues, rent or mortgage, or things of that nature, can bite you at any time, not to mention, that maybe your tastes will change, and you would like something different. Why shoot yourself in the foot now? Think of the big picture.

One last thing. This new ride you're looking at...is it also a salvage, or rebuilt title? If so, why are you so dead-set on buying a salvage vehicle...from a private dealer? If you're gonna buy salvage, buy from a private party...otherwise you're just throwing money into some dealer's pocket.

We are all just trying to help you make a good, informed decision.

That's all.

The only reason that I can see someone clinging to hope against all odds in this obviously lopsided deal is a credit issue. Is this private dealer also known as a "buy here, pay here" lot? Something similar?

I don't understand the under 150k miles,The 4.0 in the xj can run 300k if taken care of and we have a lot of members well over the 200k mark and no problems. The other thing with a older low mileage car its sat for a long time and sitting is the worse thing you can do to a car.If you try to daily drive something like that things will start to go wrong.Gaskets dry out when a engine sits so when you start to drive it they will start to leak.I rather have a high mileage car thats been taken care off with proof of it vs something low miles thats sit forever.

you'd be a fool to pay over scrap + part out value for a salvage/rebuilt title vehicle. there are a million XJs out there, find one that hasn't been railed. for starters I wouldn't trust a dealer asking 5k for that jeep knowing its history. bunch of red flags, pay heed.

As far as paying full price I wouldn't. But I wouldn't be afraid of it...he stated that they towed with the transfer case in neutral not the transmission. And he has more documentation on that vehicle than most of us with 5 vehicles . Everyone on here I've found can be some dicks about things on here and I thought we were all into the same thing...positive criticism goes a long way . None of you are professional body guys or have shows about it so why should he or want to for that matter take any advice from you. He's seeing everyone's badass xj and wants one too, now maybe not cause everyone has bashed everything he's ever said ....thanks for nothing!

he assumed they towed in neutral, he already has one Cherokee. Some on here are professional body guys, like the one who restores mustangs. He stated it was his first vehicle purchase and a lot of the members here have a lot more life experience than he does.

Edit: it seems he's had a jeep for a while. Joined in 2011 and asked multiple questions about a 91 Cherokee.

I've had my Jeep since 2007 thanks. Easy miles back and forth to high school for 3 years, then 1 year at 40 miles a day, then a break because of a blown head gasket (yes I pulled the head and the manifolds and fixed it myself). I've replaced sensors, put it newer and/or better JY parts, 99+ manifold swap. I've had my Jeep for 9 years and put almost 60k on it and it started with 205k, plus a history of XJ and ZJ ownership in the family before I was born (well an XJ). Don't try to grease me with noob lube. And the mileage? Thats just it, I've already owed an XJ with 200k, and drove it 60k, I want to get something newer, my daily driving is going to increase more than my teens and early 20s, I'm not planning on selling my next XJ purchase...that is if I decide there isn't a bunch of egotistical misinformed A holes like Ford owners. I'll just go Xterra if I have to lol.

I just want to say.... in the original post op as it "perfect" xj......

That xj has been hit, has a bent unibody, and has been stolen.......

If something like that is perfect to you I have a grip load of perfectly worn tires I'll sell you.
