The sport was not made with a 2.5
for the record, my sport has manual windows, manual locks, manual transmission... the SE's can have either the 2.5 or the 4.0, and have dummy lights instead of gauges... I hate the instrument cluster in the SE.

Year: 1996 two-door SE
Model: Cherokee
Engine: 4.0
In June of 1996, I received my 4-door Sport that I special ordered at a local dealership. In November of 1996, Chrysler traded me a new 2-door SE (my current Jeep) and some cash for my Sport (lemon law).
From what I recall about the differences between the two trim levels, the 4.0 was standard equipment in the Sport, optional in the SE. The SE's instrument cluster only had warning lights. Power windows, power door locks, and Selec-Trac weren't even optional on the SE. Cloth seats and the roof rack were standard on the Sport, optional on the SE. I'm not sure about the full center console and the rear sound bar. Air conditioning was a no-charge option on both at the time.
Optional equipment that came on my SE 4x4 were ABS, cruise control, 4.0, AW-4, light group, rear window defroster/wiper, alloy wheels (five of them), full console, sound bar, cloth seats, and radio w/ cassette. My SE is actually better equipped than my Sport was and still cost less. (Just FYI, my SE has been everything but a lemon.)

The primary difference I see is the SE instrument cluster has Idiot Lights, the Sport Cluster has gauges.
Both have the 4.0 I6 motor.
Oh and the SE has Manual Windows/Locks.
The Sport has PW/PL.
I know the 4.0 I6 was an $800 +/- option for the SE
I have the original window sticker for the 96 SE but it's not with me right now.

I have a '91 Sport, 4.0, 5 speed, idiot lights, vinyl seats, carpet, aluminum wheels and pinstripe. I am the second owner. The differences from the "Base" to the Sport is the carpet and pinstripe. The Original owner paid extra for the wheels. I also have the original window sticker.

sounds like someone may have switched out the instrument cluster then. The SE doesn't have a temperature gauge, oil pressure guage, doesn't even have a tach.

Thank you for contacting the Jeep Customer Assistance Center in regards
to your 1996 Cherokee Sport.
According to your vehicle records, the model of the vehicle is listed
as:
Jeep Cherokee Sport Utility 2-DR XJ T L 72
As your vehicle is classified as a Sport Utility, the sticker was likely
added during the manufacturing process.

If anything happens to your Cherokee and they go to pay you, they are going to pay as if it's an SE and not a Sport. It could be a matter of a couple hundred dollars.
The SE comes standard with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, manual windows and power door locks, and basic instrument cluster. The 4.0L I6 was optional. Not sure if the full gauge cluster was an option or not.
