SE is the base model, not Sport Edition. If you're insurance says SE, you may want to contact them and change it to Sport/Classic. Most of the insurance companies I've seen have 3 options for Cherokees: SE, Sport/Classic, and Limited.
If anything happens to your Cherokee and they go to pay you, they are going to pay as if it's an SE and not a Sport. It could be a matter of a couple hundred dollars.
The SE comes standard with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, manual windows and power door locks, and basic instrument cluster. The 4.0L I6 was optional. Not sure if the full gauge cluster was an option or not.
I have an SE with a 4.0 and it came with the full gauge cluster but it was also a government issued jeep so that may be why. My title says sport but my build sheet from mopar says SE. Idk why
I have a 98 se. Manual locks and Windows. Power mirrors. Rear defroster. No gauges. There are no jamb switches in the rear so dome light does not come on when rear doors are opened. The dome light is a single without the map lights, same as caravan and Dakotas use. One strange thing is it has a glove box light and my wife's 01 sport with power everything etc, does not have a glove box light.
There's more than one meaning for SE. Mine is a 96 Forest Service XJ and SE stands for Smokey Edition! It even has a badge saying its Smokey Rated. Can't ask for more definitive proof than that, can you?
