I do and its very interesting, it was originall designed by guess who...FORD of all people! Here's what I found;
****** made its first 25,000 MB Jeeps with a welded flat iron "slat" radiator grille. It was Ford who first designed and implemented the now familiar and distinctive stamped, slotted steel grille into its cars, which was lighter, used fewer resources, and was less costly to produce. Along with many other design features innovated by Ford, this was adopted by ****** and implemented into the standard World War II Jeep by April 1942.
Even today, some 65 years later, Jeep's makers proudly retain the historical connection to the visage of their ancestors by using a trademarked grille featuring a standard number of vertical openings or 'slots'. However, in order to be able to get theirs trademarked, ****** gave their post-war jeeps seven slots instead of Ford's nine-slot design. Through a long path of corporate take-overs and the like, AM General Corporation ended up with the rights to use the seven-slot grille as well, which they in turn extended to Chrysler when it purchased the entire AMC Jeep line in 1
Aint that a shocker!

thanks for the history. I'm doing a paper on quirky automotive stuff and being a Jeep fan I had to include their distinctive grill. I do like the 7 reasons to go wheelin' though!

I think some earlier model XJs had 8 slots instead of 7.
Edit: I just saw one online with 10 slots.

well, as of right now, even if Hummer did get away with using the 7-slot grill, the line is getting dropped because of poor sales and a deal with chinese investors that fell through. besides, we all know the only good hummer is the one you don't have to spend money on

i like knowing this kind of random stuff, i read all about it on wikipedia. the reason i looked into it was becuase my cherokee has 8 slots, which i thought was weird considering wranglers and CJs and even grand cherokees always have 7.
