Ive got a Sony Xplod system. Unit, 4 speakers, amp & subwoofer. Not sure on all the specs because I bought it a few years ago all at once with speaker wire, odds & ins, etc., and spent just about $600 total (I think it was like $625). Im a sound snob if you will, and although not as nice as the Boston Acoustics in my truck, the Sony sounds very good, and my Jeep is used for hunting, fishing, off-roading, etc, so I didnt want stuff that was SUPER expensive. There is a LOT of stuff out there and honestly, unless you get REALLY cheap stuff or REALLY expensive stuff, most people wont notice a difference.

I run-
Pioneer DEH-P7200HD That I got on the cheap - $289 new, I got it for $149
Rockford Fosgate T152-S Components in Q-Logic Kick Panel enclosures - About $350 Total
Rockford Fosgate T152 Coaxials in the doors and in the back - About $150
Rockford Fosgate T1693 in 6x9 boxes That sit on top of the sub box - $250
Audioque HDC3 15 Alum. Coil Subwoofer - $310
Audioque AQ2200D Sub Amp - $380
And then 2 Audioque 4x90 amps for the highs - $460
Running the 2200D off a Yellowtop and the 4x90s off of a Redtop in the front. I have a 180 Amp DC Power Alternator. Yeah, my audio system wrecks every other system at my school. It's funny to see the new Christmas presents that are like, 2 RF P3 12s and have these kids tell me they're louder than I am. It doesn't happen.

2 or 3 way (coaxial) speakers do a okay job but don't do one thing great.
Example 1 is a component set of speakers
1) example 2 is a coaxial/2 way speaker.
2)
One thing I like about Focal speakers, which a few others have done as well. Is that they have put the tweeter on the coaxial speakers movable. So you can angle it. It's not the best solution for a XJ. But it helps.
If I'm not mistaken. JL Audio has done the same and I think Alpine did as well.
Alpine head units and power amps are their strong point. They don't even make their own speakers. They out source it to someone else. This is what I've been told at the least.
There are great benefits to a aftermarket head unit (stereo/CD player/whatever you want to call it). A little more power. More control to dial in your sound. More out puts. Higher volts for running external power ie power amps.
When it comes to speakers and power. You can ruin the speakers by both things. Under powering it and over powering it. You can run after market speakers from a head unit. But it's kinda under powering them. There are 2 ratings for speaker watt performance. Peak power and RMS power. Don't pay attention to Peak power b/c it's not realistic to power a speaker continuously with that amount. RMS power gives you a range of which those speakers will operate in a healthy manner. Meaning not over powering or under powering.
Power or watts are not always consistent. It goes up and goes down. So volume 4 will not sound like volume level 4 3 hours into listening to music, lets say while driving on a road trip. Usually due to heat if I'm not mistaken. Those details I don't have exact facts on. But I think it would be safe to assume it depends on air flow, wiring, the cars alternator, cable gauge, etc.
I apply this thought to my own situation. Thought being.
If a speakers has a RMS rating of 25-75watts. A peak power of probably 150watts. I would go with a four channel 50watt per channel power amp. 50 watts continuous is pretty darn good going to four speakers. 50x4=200watts. No head unit will deliver that. Maybe if your lucky 22watts per channel.
More power. The speaker moves more pushing air and projecting sound. Sound which travels on wave length before completing a cycle.
Matched to a sub with about 200-400 watts is a really nice, tight, clean sound system.
When I listen to TOOL on a single sub vs. a dual sub. It's night and day! But personally I stick with single sub b/c I value my cargo space. Having the sub face the tail gate makes it kick way harder than to the sides.
If you get that license plate rattle (which I think is completely stupid and tacky). Take the license plate frame off and just mount the license plate by its self. I use double sided tap or foam behind the license plate its self. No rattle.
Don't become a target for thieves with a loud boisterous sound system. All these knuckle heads with 2 or 3 15" subs in the back don't know what they are doing (for the most part). If your running DB drag kinda stuff. Different story. You really don't need all that. Get quality speakers and power sources. Fine tune it. Quality of sound at lower volumes will out perform loud crappy sound equipment.
Especially if your listening to music with many instruments. Classical, jazz, rock bands like Tool or NIN where you can here all the little nuances, which would otherwise be muffled by....well crap tuning or over powering.

Sony 6.5 in the doors.
Two kicker 8's in the back
Sony 1200w amp.
I want to get new subs like maybe two 10's
the kickers cant handle very much, and they are old.

Thats cool, good for you (or maybe not). Most people cant tell the difference between a $50 and $150 dollar speaker. And if youre using an Ipod with compressed audio, it already sounds like crap anyway so whats the point of dropping $2K on a system, just so you can say it cost that much? Again, for MOST people (excluding you) any decent middle of the road set of speakers are all you need.

i have a middle of the road system in mine i was saying there was a huge difference between a cheap dual or durabrand vs a higher end system. i also use a modded sandisk sansa with flac support so its uncompressed music.
personally i can't stand sony or pioneer speakers but that is just my opinion. for the money of those low end kickers, high end pyramids, low end alpines all sit in the same range. i would bet they sound better...

If we're on the subject of speaker quality, which it seems we are, I can go ahead and say that if you're going for raw SQ (Sound Quality) Rockford Fosgate is not the way to go. The highs are nice and crisp, but the mids are very lacking, and for SQ there are much better options. The only reason I run RF is because they get so damn loud, so if loudness is what you're going for, I really couldn't recommend anything else.
