spinning in circles.... which way to best traction
XJ stock/4.0 automatic transmission. Not sure if my sig. is still active. Been having trouble signing in.
I have the impression that the true track type of read diff is a possible best choice. Money is an object, what about lockers?
Lockers front and rear? Can that work. I know there can be issues in this area.
I read lockers have a 20k mile life more or less. Is the milage compiled only when lockers are ingaged or is it every mile I travel in the XJ?
I hear of other brands of vehicles having interchangeable read diffs w/my cherokee, i.e. Ford Chrysler etc. How do I go about insuring the spline numbers are compatible? Right now I don't know my spline number for the back diff. I remember somewhere on this forum I can find nearly all that info thanks to some thoughtful individual. But alas, I don't remember where. I recently changed browsers and have been in trouble ever since. So thanks for listening and any help.

mileage on a locker depends the type a clutch style has the shortest lift and honestly not the best off road they are more street kind.A gear or air selectable locker can last forever if you don't break it wheeling super hard.Yes you can put a locker in both axles if you want.Budget and if you can set up a gear set in a rear end come in to play on what you buy.The cheapest and easier is a lunch box locker it replaces the spider gears,Then you got a full carrier locker which replaced the whole diff those cost more and you have to set up the gears again so if your going in that far its the best time to change the gear ratio if you have or want larger tires.

Ron, I'm a little confused here.
I'm sure you already started a thread just like this one a while back.
We all answered, gave good advice, provided links for you, and here you are coming back with this "I heard" crap.
You don't trust our advice? You would rather rely on internet hearsay?
I'll say it one more time and then I'm done.
For about $300 you can install an Aussie locker in the rear. Done. No gears to set up. No mechanic to pay. Simple. Do you want to spend $1000 to install something else?
You need to crap or get off the pot. Winter is coming!!!

being that it's an 87, it just might have the d44.
i've had my loc-rite in my d44 for 12 or so years now while running 36 inch bias ply.
i would hesitate putting a locker into a d35 with 33's or larger. but if you're not too hard on the skinny pedal, you might get away with it on 33's for a while.

I thought he just had a long, sometimes muddy, road to and from his house.
