Default Stuck in 4wd

I was off-road yesterday. Driving in 4w low. When I left I switched back to 2wd. Got up to about 25 mph and the jeep started shaking uncontrollably. I went back into 4wd and it stopped shaking. I've tried driving in reverse and shifting from D to R multiple times. Fluid is full. Any suggestions? I read that it could be the transfer case but that seems like a project...

Yes. Shift it as it was designed to be shifted.

Which transfer case do you have?

Same size tires all around and inflated to the same pressures?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

Are you lifted with a TC drop kit installed? If either of these are true and you haven't re-adjusted the T/C linkage that could be it also, know first hand about that and what happens.

I have to manually shift back into 2wd. Not sure where on the TC I have to go. I know I need vise grips and turn counter clockwise. The TC is a 242.

If it's a 242, did you try it in full time 4wd ???

Or maybe as others have suggested, your shifter is messed up and when you're in "2wd" then maybe you're still in "4-hi" (part time) and moving back to "4wd" puts you in full time (which is okay on the hard road).

Does neutral line up correctly?

we had a problem like this at the dealer. always wanted to pop back out of 2wd and in between 2 and 4wd. check the shifter linkage for the transfer case. there are some bushings that tend to go bad or maybe something is bent. try holding the shifter down in 2wd while driving a little bit and see what the shifter feels like and if it drives any better with out the shaking

So, you haven't tried shifting it as described in Post 2?

Is there fluid in the transfer case?

I tried everything... Fluid was the first thing I checked. I think I found the problem. The lower control arm mount snapped. Expensive fix if I take it to a wielding shop? I mean I don't know why it's still in 4wd. But that certainly isn't helping

honestly shouldnt be to much for a shop to weld that up. and its possible that one side leaning is putting to much pressure on the axle to let it go back to 2wd. hopfully the weld fixes your problem
