Now no joking aside if he has anything to tie onto (or drive a stake into the ground) he could use a Hi-Lift jack to pull it out no further than it has to be pulled. I have made longer pull's than that with my jack before I bought a winch.

The word you guys were looking for is a Sky Crane I had to use them several times when I had the towing companies in CO.
Out there its against the law to abandon a car in the mountains and sometimes they would fall several thousand feet from the roadway on one a truck and the other in the same place a Corvette. Both were almost new and claimed as stolen, the insurance companies weren't happy with the bills to get junk back either both were over $10k for the crane, my towing and storage.

Huh ???
Must be a somewhat recent law because there's a whole bunch of wrecked cars down in the canyon off of Monarch pass. You can't see them from the road but if you stop at a pull-off and look over the guard rails, you will see what first looks like little ***** of wrapping paper down there and after a while you figure out that they are wrecked cars about 3000' down. Cars have been going off that road for about a hundred years now so there's quite a collection - or at least there was back about 30 years ago.

Go to harbor freight and buy a farm Jack, tow strap and a chain. Use the tow strap to your rig... chain around tree/other vehicle and use the Jack as a winch.
Cheap and you gain some stuff you might need again.

This was almost a week ago and the op hasn't posted again. Either he fell in the sink hole and didn't come out, or he got it out and doesn't care to report back. I'd stop beating a dead horse.

How do you start a thread like this and not give updates or, more importantly, pics?
This is the reason why we need reputation points. I want to neg so badly . . .

Ok, well I was living in Gunnison County at that time and never heard such a thing. Maybe there weren't that many vehicles with full coverage.
I remember when a college girl went off the pass about that time (1975?). She had gone home for the weekend and stopped on Trout Creek Pass and forgot her coat. She drove back to get it and was hurrying back to school Sunday night and went off Monarch. I was working in Gunnison but didn't know her, but a few years later I got to know her parents who had a summer cabin north of Gunnison.
Anyway there's a lot of wrecked cars off of Monarch Pass. I can't imagine risking life to use a helicopter to recover a wrecked car from down in that canyon for any amount of money.
