The one you found looked good to me. Yes it needs work but not as much as it looks. The door is no big deal. Most likely just something simple. The front end is 100-200 for parts in a junk yard and a weekend replacing parts since its your first time. Buy the looks of the bumper there isn't frame damage. The battery 75 at Wallmart. The oil senor is 60 if I remember right. Getting the point. Yes it will be some work simple work were you just might learn something. I know that will freak some people out. I think it is a good jeep to start on. Most people I know don't keep there first one forever. And when your dune sell it for what you have into it and keep the knowledge for your nest project. How ever the second one UN150N posted was a good looking ready to drive jeep. Keep looking you will know what you want when you find it.

Dealerships scare me.
And after a quick Craigslist escapade, I have determined that Memphis is a Jeep wasteland. I pity you.

yes, indeed i know. thats one of the reasons why i want one, no one has one.
there are a few lifted ones around(by few i mean 4 or 5 total in the mid south, and only half of those are actually wheeled)
and there are a bunch around that i see everyday on the road that are 2wd.

but i might not have to search anymore

drove my dads wrongler with him over to his buds house in arkansas a couple days ago, and man are those things fun to drive!(manual, topless on the interstate going 80) but anyway when we pulled up to his friends house, i about shat myself when i saw there was a white 2dr 90-96 xj sitting on his driveway that lookied like it hasnt been driven in a few years. got to talking to him and he said its got 250k on it hes the original owner, but its 2wd. my dad got to telling him how much i like cherokees and he said that he was trying to get rid of it, and if i drive it home its mine. i was like, haha funny arent you. and he said, ''nope my wifes making me get rid of it cause shes tired of looking at it.''
seeing that im 15, my dad wouldnt me, so when i turn 16, from what he told me, its mine!

but kinda bummed out about the 2wd part. might keep it, and spend the money ive been saving on a 4x4 to lift and have 2 xjs, or convert it to 4x4. thoughts? and dont have much knowledge on taking apart axles and what not, nor do i have money to pay for insurance on 2 jeeps.

Just convert it to 4wd, you could not ask for any easier vehicle to convert.

but how hard is it gonna be for me to convert it?, i dont have any knowledge, and my dad is a jeep guy but prefersto pay people to fix his cars.(lame) i dont know how he is gonna feel about me hacking up and converting it, but im sure he'll be all for it after he has to come pull me out once or twice in his wrongler. i know alot about offroading, like alot, but very little about taking apart vehicles.

If its free, TAKE IT...if you get it running good and fix it up a little you can always sell it and get a 4wd with the money you cave and the money from the sale if you wanted. You can always convert also if you have the means to (tools, knowledge, time) Either way..a free XJ is a GREAT XJ. Don't settle for a wrongler....get an XJ my friend.....good luck and happy wheeling when you get there

Shouldn't be any hacking up. Converting it will be a bolt in procedure pretty much.

I WILL NEVER OWN A WRONGLER. NEVER. but thanks, it sounds leke it would be alot easier to sell it, and keep looking for what i exactly want(97-99 4x4) than converting it. but selling a 20 year old vehicle with over 250k on it, your better of keeping it. so idk, ill just figure it out when i get it.

its gonna be a while until im wheeling, but it will be well worth it

well i think i found the one, 1997 manual 4x4 under 160k, heres what the guy who sent me the emasil said:
here are a cpl of pics. only thing different now is the tires and wheels arent the same ones pictured... can get a pic of the ones on it now if ya want. they are street tires....... its got the factory infinity amp and power leather seat.
The bumper that was on it when i got it was dented and Ive found another red one just havent put it on yet... The drivers door has a small crease in it ya can see just above the trim. The body is rust free and the paint still shines.
It runs good and strong but has a rough idle. .
I had bought it for the girl I was dating and we ended up splitting up and ive already got a Automatic cherokee which is what I prefer so this one has just been sitting. if ya got any questions just ask or if ya want more pics let me know..... $2950 is what Ive got in it and thats what id like back out of it....... the ones similar on ebay are going for more than that. thanks, Ron

the guy is pretty firm on the price, and lives in alabama... but i might consider going to look at it. and im probably just gonna use the white 96 2dr for parts or sell it to pay for this(when i get it)

Dude, selling a 20 year old vehicle with 250,000 on it is not easy..but is an XJ...you won't have any problem selling it...even being a 2 wheel drive, they will buy it for parts or convert it..no biggie. There is a HUGE market out there and tons of ppl want these vehicles for off roading, the miles arent even importmant really. I just bought my 98 with 155,00 and I paid $2,300 and I feel I got a great deal, it runs great with the 4.0, the 4x4 works flawlessly....so don't worry about selling it.
