Default Tire Size replacement confusion

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2003 my tire size seems to be 225/75/16. I'm in Toronto and cheap tires run around $1000 for four installed, so I would like to get this right. On top of it, the rims are a little worse for wear (rim leaks), so this might be an easy $2K for this old beast. My driving is easy urban, occasional 100km trip. I'm entertaining going with new 17" rims and P235/65R17 tires. My guess is that it will throw the speedo off a bit, but hoping for better fuel consumption.

Anyone do this? Tips?

Hardly a difference in diameter, doubt there to much of a noticeable difference in either speed or fuel consumption. Talking ~6.7mm

The biggest size of tire available on any WJ Grand Cherokee (1999-2004) was P245/65R17. The Laredo models had P225/75R16 as standard, with P245/70R16 as an option. The Limiteds from 2002-04 and Overlands had the P235/65R17 and P245/65R17 tires. If you get a fifth matching spare, it'll fit in the cargo area. I'm running P225/75R16's (stock size) on my '02 WJ Laredo. I currently have older Cooper Discoverer AT/3's and 16"x7" Wrangler JK alloys on it, with the Goodyear Wrangler S/T P225/75R16 spare and matching fifth spare wheel. It shouldn't throw the calibration of the speedo off much, if at all. Fuel economy shouldn't suffer too much, either.

Thank-you for that articulate detailed response, I totally forgot about fitting in the spare.

I'm still shopping. -Pat

Yes, the spare should fit in the spare wheel well up to P245/65R17 at least. You could probably even fit wider sidewalls in there if you either deflated the spare a bit (keep a 12 V DC pump in your Jeep for re-inflation in case you need it if you go that route), OR forewent the carpet cargo cover, and just had the cargo floor exposed.
