I've run BFG A/T's on most of my XJ / TJ's, great all round tire in everything except for mud...
Had great experience with the old Goodyear MTR's, with they still made them, only they didn't last as long as the BFG's.
saying that, I'm planning on gettin' new tires in the spring, looking at Procomps Xtreme M/T's 33/12.5 15's. I like the tread pattern & they're not too aggressive. Anyone run them or have any experience? I live in Buffalo NY and gotta drive in deep snow in the winters along with wheeling in mud during the summer months....

I run BFG AT's and they are pretty good for me. They work fine on the beach, ride fine on the road, and like it was said before they are terrible in the mud.

I play on rocks and ride trails. My KM2's hooked up well when they were at 10-12 PSI. I'm about to get a set of Cooper STT's though. A lot of people in my club have them and they preform very well.

I've ran 3 different sizes of km2s and disliked each.
I wheel south east terrain..
Dry rock, slick Rock.. you get the picture.
My Mickey Thompson MTZs would dig and bite where the km would just spin like a racing slick.

How much did you air down? Mine improved drastically at 10-12.
MTZ's do well, but I've seen several sets with balancing problems that gave wagon trail ride quality.

Favorite tires I ran were my old bias ply TSLs, everywhere except the street. I had them grooved and also added enough siping to make snow tires jealous. Even at 15psi they grabbed rocks awesome. Now I'm running a set of Baja Claws I impulse bought, also grooved and siped. So far I'm disappointed everywhere except the street, hoping their saving grace will be snow. They are fine on rocks going in a straight line, but the slightest off-camber and they will slide, which gets real sketchy on a sidehill that is 1000 feet to the bottom...

I've run quite an assortment...
But if you just want some DD tires that you'll have confidence in to leave the pavement in I'd get the BFG ATs...
If you want a lil more capability get the KM2s...
Those are two very safe routes I don't think you'll be upset with that will wear well if you take care of 'em...
However, I love Mickey Thompsons/Toyos/Iroks/Pitbulls but something tells me you're not that serious.
If your asking, then that means you don't live and breathe tires thus don't get off the beaten path much... just saying... I'd go w/ good ol BFG.

If you value longevity, stay away from anything Goodyear or Cooper. For a cross-country/gravel/wet/snow go with Michelin A/T2. They're good for light off-roading as well. They don't look aggressive, but Michelin is top of the line in maximizing traction with low-profile tread, and everything they make is smooth as butter on the road. Another good "all-terrain" tire is the Hankook ATM. Hankooks are solid quality, and a pretty decent ride.
For primarily off-road go with BF Mud-Terrain T/A KM2. BF is a pioneer in the industry when it comes to off-road tires. I have heard that the All-Terrains aren't great in mud, but if you're doing serious mudding you should get a serious mud tire.
Basically I break it down like this for best brands:
All season/primarily on road- 1) Michelin 2)Hankook 3)Yokohama
All terrain- 1)BF Goodrich 2)Hankook 3)Yokohama
Off Road- 1)BFG Mud-Terrain.............Some other brands are good, but these are cream of the crop.
And if you're getting tires for a car ever, go with Michelins all day if you have the money. The Defender is a high quality all season tire with a 90,000 mile warranty, and low tread depth to improve gas-mileage.

As far as I'm concerned, in the world of rubber, you get what you pay for.

Michelin isn't at the top of my list, they don't make a maximum terrain tire.
My reasoning for buying tires is:
What works on east cost terrain?
What works on rocks?
Price?
Street ability?

So.. I suck at picking tires, and the first thing mine needs after I get her running is a new set of shoes.. so I thought might as well start a tread style thread.. Not so much a size just what tread works well for what you use it for. my 2c, BFG AT's pretty good in the sand and rocks, but absolutely horrid in the mud.. Dunlop mud rovers.. good all around tire, but really soft sidewall's and I had to replace 2 due to cuts.... so who likes what? and for what?
