What? The only two tcases a 98 XJ would have come with would have been either a NVG231 or NVG242. I'm not sure where a Scion comes into this. You may be thinking of the AW4 transmission which is an Aisin Warner gear box, The manual transmissions were also made by Aisin . Aisin is a Japanese company that specializes in transmissions and they're something like 30 percent owned by Toyota. Damn good transmissions.

What I found interesting was the first time I got under our Touareg to change the oil I noticed it said Aisin on the transmission.

Quite a few European makes have used Aisin-Warner automatic transmissions. Many of them also used its ancestor, the old Borg-Warner 3-speed slushbox, from 1960s-1990s.
