Trans problem and Fix.
Hi everyone. I wanted to share my latest XJ problem and solution. For the last year my transmission started shifting really hard and at highway speeds it would switch gears if I pressed the gas even just a little. In September I finally got a code from the trans. The code was for a output speed sensor. I changed the sensor twice but the problem was still occurring. I just dealt with the problem but after a while the trans started shifting into neutral all by it's self on the highway. The only way it would act right is it I over filled the trans with fluid. I started not trusting my jeep so it was time to figure out the problem. I thought I might have a broken wire that was causing the problem but when I did a continuity test on all the wires but everything checked fine. I had a friend test the output speed sensor with a programmer. The sensor checked fine and acted normally. I came to the conclusion the TCU might be bad. I went to a local JY and picked one up for $75. I plugged it in all the problems went away. The shifting became smooth. The trans doesn't shift into neutral on the highway anymore and the trans doesn't shift to a lower gear just because I touch the gas. I hope this helps someone with a similar problem.
