Default Trimming front fenderwells

My 97 2dr has an RC 3''AAL. I installed 31x10.5 DuraTracs on 8'' wide soft 8's with 4.5'' backspacing. They were rubbing quite a bit so I removed the bumper end caps and cut the fenderwells in front to clear the tires. The tires still hit pretty bad in the back of the fenders so I cut away about 3/4'' of the sheet metal and trimmed the plastic on the rear of the fenderwell about 4'' up from where it attaches to the sheet metal. This leaves a big (well, 4'') gap between the new top of the plastic inner fenderwell and the rocker panel. I need to find a way to fill in/cover this gap so mud/snow/salt don't get packed up in there and rot out my rocker panels. I searched the site long and hard, but found nothing that applies. I doubt that I'm the first to run into this issue and I imagine that, as usual, you guys will bail me out with some expert advice. I hope the answer is not to cobble a patch out of several layers of black duct tape!

Thanks

Any gap just get a piece of sheet metal and trim to fit, maybe rivets and some sort of seal, I think I know what you are talking about, my friend did the same but we are in CA so snow is a non issue
post a pic to give a better idea

this is what I did, 3" RC on 33" tall tires (actually measured 33.2")

you will not need to cut quite so much, are you sure you are not running on the control arm?

also cut and folded the inside lip...

then made some flares...

Thanks for the answers guys. No, the tires are not rubbing on the control arms, but i haven't wheeled her very hard yet. I'm not much good with computers, but I'm going to try to attach some photos I took.
