Are there? I think you're right. Although if the red brake light is very visible, how much does it matter after that point? If I were the OP, I'd remove the Niteshade, and then do a few light coats and be done with it. Give it a smoked look, but still have visible lights.

Mine faded on their own but you could try weathering them in the sun haha, i actually think mine look better than before because its more of a grey tint and it doesn't block the lights at all

Calm down and don't worry about it. If it happens all you have to do is get a stock set and go to the court house, show them that you fixed it, and pay $25. (At least in CA that's how much it is)
I would go to the home improvement store and get some wet sand paper and try to get a little off so it's not so dark.
I think it looks pretty cool to black out the tail lights but not too dark like that. I like the shade of those 97 tail lights!
