Default Is this true?

Some people say that the Jeep cars - and maybe some other cars - have some stuff in the exahust system in order to save the Ozone layer and when this stuff finishes, the "check engine light" comes on.... is this true?a

i really doubt that jeeps or other vehicles have that kind of stuff in them. it would be nearly impossible to pull off and think of how many people do custom exhausts.

Isn't that the point in a Catalytic Converter?

the cat does help with emissions but it doesnt "finish" and cause the light to turn on. it can get clogged or break though.

A Bad Cat won't cause a check engine light?

I think a better way to put it is
When the Cat is no longer effective a check engine light could come on
I know on my 96 there is an downstream o2 sensor and if the cat isnt working right the check engine light comes on

If you have a down stream O2 sensor it will come on when the catalytic converter is no longer being efficient. What his friends are referring to is that the cat cuts down on some greenhouse gasses that we could call smog. However, the end result is more CO2 than would have been without it. But this gas is a greenhouse gas, but less so than whatever other gasses that would come out without a cat.

He's from a Middle Eastern country...so nothing is an exact translation. Think outside the box and you will understand what he is getting at.

I think what Arab1970 is thinking about is the Urea that is used in the new diesel engines to help them pass emmisions. When you take the vehicle in for service/oil changes they refill the urea. Just another way to get you back to the dealer so they can take more of your hard earned money. This is from Wikipedia----- Automobile systems
Urea is used in SNCR and SCR reactions to reduce the NOx pollutants in exhaust gases from combustion, for example, from power plants and diesel engines. The BlueTec system, for example, injects water-based urea solution into the exhaust system. The ammonia produced by decomposition of the urea reacts with the nitrogen oxide emissions and is converted into nitrogen and water within the catalytic converter.

Also know as Exhaust System Fluid, not to be confused with muffler bearings. Just another costly way to regulate emissions
