Turbo on my 89 XJ?
#17
Some think a turbo is magic will bolt right on and double or triple your power all on its own.A high mileage engine and like 6 to 8 psi you might make the stock dyno numbers for 2 grand or more.I rather spend that money on a long block stroker and have a brand new engine with more power.

Its mostly younger guys that think because most imports have turbo kits you can find one for anything.Or believe they can make a ton of power on a stock high mileage motor buy boosting it.

"Turbo on my 89 XJ?"
Why bother?
If you have an excessive amount of $$$$$$ burning a hole in your pocket, I'll be more than happy to take care of it for you.
Better to have cash sitting in the bank for a "rainy day" vs sitting out in the driveway.

I love turbos on so many levels and wish I could utilize the technology, but I have neither the time nor skill to build something from scratch. So much "smarter" than superchargers and can be tailored to my purposes much better than SC. I really appreciate how user-friendly CorbraMarty's supercharger stuff is; I wish there was a "CobraMarty" of turbos for us. Since I recently dropped a ton of money on a fantastic exhaust including header, I suppose I should stop fantasizing about a turbo, though...
I always see talk of using SC/TC vs stroker. SOOOOO puzzling to me since they are not mutually exclusive. People talk as if you either boost a 4.0 or build a stroker. No one is stopping anyone from building a stroker AND using a SC/TC. I suppose it is the cost of doing both that puts most people off since neither is cheap. I know I'll be lucky to ever afford even one, so unless something changes, my budget will force me to choose between stroker OR supercharger in the future (probably stroker since I'll have to be rebuilding my whole engine at that time anyway).

My only thing against a stroker is-
1-the 4.0L head barely flows enough air for a 4.0L, how can it flow enough for a 4.6L stroker, unless you spend $1500+. A stroker will add TQ but not much HP. But then again that is just what the jeep needs.
2-the tune. It will need bigger injectors and a ecu retune. Bigger injectors are $250+ and the retune $600 + need a wideband O2 sensor. Without a retuned ecu it will never run right.
3-cost and build time
4-expensive
My SC kit, you leave the stock injectors and ecu tune alone. Keep it all as Jeep wanted. All stock manners. With the SC, you add basically a second fueling system. A 7th injector and a stand alone controller, which controls the boost fuel and boost timing retard needed. You essentially tap into the stock fuel line and tap the stock sensors. Only works when in boost. $50 injector and $585 controller.
-can be done in a weekend
-tuning is simple, plug and play
-replacement engine is only a JY away
-boost will make the stock head and cam flow enough air for +60rwhp and +70rwtq
I love turbos but packaging in the Jeep XJ with the non-crossflow head is a nightmare. Underhood temps are higher. Must have an intercooler and it has it's own packaging difficulties.

I can't argue with anything you said other than having seen many strokers do fine without extensive retuning (I'd like some quality head work done whether I stroke or not when the time comes, so that's a wash for me regardless of whether it really is necessary or not), and that is why when the day comes to refresh my motor, you'll be on my mind whether I stroke it or not.
