I have a few things too add. As mention the 2000-'01 XJ's had a few changes. The front axle is going to be a a Low Pinion Dana 30. Before 2000 XJ's came with High Pinion Frontends which give less vibration etc. when lifted. As far as the Head Issue the head casting will inevitably crack if overheated. I personally would take a good look at the cooling system maintence previously preformed. Again youll want a chrysler 8.25 which you can also identify by the xj having no abs. If youll be looking to romp on her with 35's or 36's you deffinatly want some axle upgrades imo. It will have coil packs. But id imagine it will be rust free, in good shape, and a limited edition.

I get people like the LOOK of xj's better but that's not my point unless the only reason people buy xj's is for looks

I have done direct comparisons. and have both. The xj has a much lower center of gravity with more ground clearance. The xj is lighter by a few hundred lbs. 4in shorter wheelbase.
So with the same tires and same lift the xj has about a 3-4in ground clearance advantage which is huge! And its about 4 inches shorter in overall height. The weight translates into about 30hp in favor of the xj.
Its also a few inches narrower and shorter in the body.
I personally feel these are big advantages in off road. On road the grand cherokee wins. Its a smoother ride, more room, more comfortable.

Still recommend the axle upgrade if you're going to beat on it.

And ≥36's on stock axles is just stupid. All the experience/smart people on here have a point when they say pick your tire then build for it.
