Vacuum bypass, now stuck in 4x4

The axle does NOT engage 4wd. The transfer case does. If you're getting hopping in the front end, your axle u-joints could be bad.
And 88s had part-time and full-time transfer cases available. Full-time had both positions in the transfer case and a non-disconnect front axle.

You're making this SOOOOO over complicated that my head hurts.
Go adjust your transfer case shift linkage. With the transfer case lever in 2HI after that, go drive it in circles. Still hopping?
Jack up the front end and spin one of the front wheels one way.
What does the other wheel do?
Leave the front end on stands and report back.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I'm having issues with my 4wd..... I can hear the transfer case disengage but think the axle is stuck. . Jacked it up turned one wheel the other didn't turn but drive shaft did. Same thing on other wheel. My tires are squealing when turning hitting the lines on the road etc... np231 case low dana 30 in a 99 xj.... Going to check fluid level when I get home....
