5.9 ftmfl on gas mileage. Between the biggest displacement offered and the constant need to test the *** dyno it camt be good!

That being said, if you get a V8 get a 96-98 because the transfer case will lock in 4 lo unlike previous years.

I have a 95 Laredo with the 4.0 and the 231 transfercase. I love it! It's no rocket, but it cruises nicely and is easier to work on under the hood than the v8 ZJs, plus I don't have the AWD headaches like the v8 ZJs. The best gas mileage I've ever gotten was 20mpg, but I average about 17mpg most of the time. The V8 won't have much less as far as fuel mileage, the v8 engine does not have to work as hard as the 4.0 to move the ZJ around. The ZJ is just as good off road as the XJ is, don't let anybody tell you otherwise. The downside to a ZJ is that there are less options available for heavy duty off roading equipment, like bumpers and stuff can be found at a much higher price that it would be for an XJ, and there is not much choice. Some say ZJs have a lot of electrical issues, but they have no more problems than an XJ. Drive one and will fall in love with how much quieter it is and how nice the ride is.

Couldn't say it any better. I like the look of the XJ better, but GC (especially WJ's) can be made to look pretty sick.
