98/99. I love my 99 however I wish it was a 98 cause of the header options due to the 99 having the newer intake manifold

When I bought mine I searched high and low for ONLY a 95 because it was the newest I could buy without the government stickin its snoot into my life with the OBD II computer, you can't get an inspection sticker here if the check engine light is on with any 96 or newer vehicles.

Before my XJ I had a 96 F-150 that I had to go to fix something on EVERY single year at inspection time to get a sticker, 8 years in a row.

One year my misfire cost over $700 to diagnose and repair.

My 95 XJ breezes through inspection every year, no problem.

1999 was the best year of the XJ, IMO.

I've had an 86, 87, 92, two 93's, 97, 98 and a 99.

No matter what anyone says, you don't have a Jeep problem...... You Sir have an XJ problem. Let me finish by saying "good for you, I applaud you"

Seeing as my first Cherokee is an 88 I have to say that is the best year. It's simple and a newb at turning wrenches it gives me a lot of learning room. I had an 07 wrongler back in high school and I liked it. I think the best advice I can give is drive whatever makes you happy, man.

thats what im sayin. easiest vehicle ive ever had to work on, a basic set of wrenches, a basic socket set and a couple screwdrivers (maybe a pipewrench of pita nuts and bolts) and you can do almost any job.

but like everyone is saying parts are pretty much pick, swap, bolt in. no matter what you get just fix/upgrade whatever breaks and get out there and break some more on the trails

1994 is the best soley because it is the last year before airbags went in. pesky airbags..

I'll never own another renix. if my 94 craps out is gonna be a 98 or 99. well, at least it will be a shell of one of those. cant stand the awful interior..

I love my 93 for many of the listed reasons, no airbags no obd.... Emissions testing consists of, " is there smoke coming out? Nope, ok you pass.

Nope, I live in junior Cali aka Massachusetts. As I mentioned in another thread, they tried to fail me for not having a 3rd brake light which Chrysler later confirmed did not exist on a 93 cherokee.

83 and older, no emission requirements at all, you can run straight pipes from the header with no cat....as long as it doesn't smoke.
