95 cherokee not shifting out of first gear
Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum so bare with me. I recently bought a 95 cherokee. 4wd auto transmission. I have had no problems with this jeep up until now. Last week tranny fluid started pouring out while driving and and I limped it to my mechanic. Apparantly a bolt or something blew a hole through the transmission hose, long story short my mechanic fixed the problem. I picked the jeep up yesterday seemed to be driving fine and then I came to a stop put my foot on the gas and it had barely any power. When I got to my driveway (which is a huge hill) I barely got up it. Now this morning I jump in and it wont even shift out of first. Is my tranny blown? Ive been told the cherokee transmissions are pretty resiliant so im hoping not. Any suggestions or comments would really help! P.s. Sorry for the long post!

It does have fluid in it leaking slightly though, and I'm not sure what kind he used to be honest. Hes a jeep guy so I do trust him. Sorry for the post in this thread! Next time I'll post it in the questions

Ur New, its ok. We all post in the wrong sections. Even if he IS a jeep guy its a well known fact aw4 trannys don't like atf+4, use dex/merc fluid. And a quality wix filter. Ive never had a problem doing this. I would find out for sure what fluid he used. If he used +4, hes nit that good on jeeps. Can u service the trans your self if you had step by step instructions? It doesn't take Manu tools. I would drain and refill with a good filter. If that doesn't get it.....try sea foam trans tune, but if you rat out of fluid and overheated the trans, it could be cooked.
I just texted him and asked what kind of fluid he used. I myself am not too mechanically inclined enough to do that kind of work myself. The jeep is down at the shop now so im crossing my fingers I didnt smoke the tranny. If I did anyone know what kind of $$$ im in for?

Not pointing fingers, but wouldn't it be the mechanic's fault for using the wrong fluid?

well maybe. keep in mind that last week when I noticed tranny fluid spewing all over the jeep and then it started slipping gears I was about 15 miles away from my shop so I just limped it there. So I think its actually my fault. The jeep ran fine up until last night when I pulled in my driveway and it lost power up my hill. Then this morning it wouldnt even shift out of first. Ive never had a auto tranny blow on me before so I dont what the symptoms are.
