I could leave them at my Uncles house, but he's about 4 miles out of the way towards nothing. I was going to leave them there but I didn't want to run out to his house every time I needed them.

I've had a bad spark plug wire causing a misfire for a couple months so I decided to replace them this weekend (Accel). While I was at it, I replaced the spark plugs (Champion) then went a little crazy and replaced her valve cover gasket and what good is a new gasket on a filthy valve cover, so I stripped it and painted with that black, high-temp crinkle pain. I liked it so I pulled some other stuff and painted that, too.

Before...

After...

After...

One more after...

Nice work! Looks like you painted the bulge out of the upper rad hose, too! :P What did you do to get lines like that on the top of the valve cover? Sand them down after painting or just something like a silver pen?

My upper rad hose is only three weeks old but the before pictures (and bulging hose) are from a few months ago when I swapped out my injectors I sanded the paint off after it was dry, started with 100 and finished with 220 grit.

First, exercise forum etiquette by posting your question in the correct location. You don't have a Jeep so posting your question in a thread called "What did you do to your Cherokee today?" isn't appropriate because you obviously didn't do anything to a car you don't have.

But, you're young and excited and new so we'll forgive you. My thoughts are that you'll probably be able to find a decent rig within your budget. Take your time, don't buy the first thing you see just because it has big tires and a lift. Ask about death wobble, ask about things specific to the year, study up on what to look for and know how to spot abuse.

Welcome to the forum! Hopefully you do get an XJ, they're awesome beasts and really easy to work on. (Well aside from seized components)

Best year (in my humble opinion, though not that I would be biased... lol) is 1999. Here's sort of a basic rundown of the years:

86-87: Came with crap GM V6 or 2.5L I4. Avoid the V6 or swap a new engine in
88-90: Start of the legendary 4.0L, but with obscure electronics. Not fancy, and anything can be troubleshot with a multimeter... I guess pretty simple as far as EFI goes. Getting harder to find some parts
91-95: Standardish OBD1 computer, very popular. Chrysler 8.25 axle on these years sucks.
96: Bastard year that can have some 97+ components (like good C8.25 axle), OBD2 engine with older body style. I believe the dual-diaphragm master brake cylinder was added here
97-99: OBD2, good Chrysler 8.25
00-01: Modern coil-on-plug ignition, extra catalytic converters, weak head casting, low-pinion front axle.

(The I4 is basically an amputated I6, though some parts are different)

Now... junkyard parts exist that can rectify most of the above. For instance, on the 2000+ models as long as it's been well taken care of the expensive exhaust and weak head isn't really a problem. Running dirty and overheating can quickly turn these guys into a money sink where the older I6 4.0L engines shrug it off.

The big things to watch out for are lack of maintenance and rust. With the exception of rusted frame rails and center console latch (lol) pretty much everything can be fixed, it's just a matter of how much of a pain in the **** it will be. Some key items to check out:
  • Rocker & floor pan rust
  • Frame rail rust
  • Condition of engine coolant (should be green and sweet-smelling, no oil present)
  • Condition of transmission coolant (automatics check the dipstick for red color, doesn't smell burnt. Manuals you can tell the internal condition by how it shifts)
  • Condition of engine oil and what filter's on there (if the stuff is water or sludge or the owner's had FRAM filters on there for a dozen years there's probably an issue)
  • Knocking from the engine
  • Knocking from the driveline (U-Joints are easily replaceable, but a transfer case that needs rebuilding would be a score against)
  • Colored smoke from exhaust (blue, black, white)

I wouldn't be too concerned with stuff like:
  • Malfunctioning power window switches
  • Sloppy steering
  • Saggy suspension (It's a Jeep - replace it all!)

The biggest thing about this forum is that with almost 64,000 members it's probably been said before. Add "site:cherokeeforum.com" to a Google search and you can search this site. There's lots here already... so please don't ask what kind of oil to run lol

Oh, and stuff like this belongs in threads like THESE: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/ask...-thread-45772/ not people posting what they broke (I mean fixed)
