I thought the computer memory stored the mileage for the cluster, so even if you got a new cluster it would show the vehicles mileage in the 97+... I have a drill bit with a gear on it that would work on pre 97 odometers. Had to roll back a replacement odometer to get the correct mileage to display for my 92.

I have a 1998 xj and put a 2000 xj gauge cluster in and it reads the mileage of the 2000 xj. So i don't think the computer has anything to do with the odometer.

Maybe there is a removable memory card inside the cluster? There has to be a way, how else would a dealer replace a cluster and read the correct mileage?

I wouldnt go around telling people about using that drill.. could get you in alot of trouble around these parts. Either with the law or anyone you've ever sold a vehicle to.

A '92 has a mechanical odometer so you can at least modify the position of the numbers. Was cable driven speedo just a Renix thing or did they still do that in '92?

In 97+ models there is a computer/microcontroller in the instrument cluster itself that tracks mileage.

lol. It's a criminal offense to tamper with these things, I doubt they'd have a MicroSD card like your camera. I'd imagine there's a very closely held way to reprogram them, probably through some primitive developer interface to the chip.

Went by the paint shop to see how things were going. They hadn't started yet! Apparently, the body shop guy has been out for a few days because of "personal issues". I had asked them to give me a quote on installing the Bushwhacker flat flares, since they might as well do the cut and folding BEFORE painting. Maybe I'll get her back by the weekend.

Mechanical is Renix.

I'd just drill a hole in the roof, put a rubber gasket in it, run the wires and rtv the rest of the opening
