I did and they are strong enough to hold a D60 in place with 39.5's so far. Heck the 3rd link upper, tracbar and the entire steering setup are DOM with weld in bungs. If you can do it in a shop correctly do it by hand.

Yesterday found this behind a barn... Its an interior hoop from a full size dodge. Worked on it 4 hrs yest to get it to fit the xj. Paint is drying. Makes my old b-pillar hoop look tiny. Had to cut 6" out of the center at the top so i sleeved it inside with some 3/16" tube. Drilled holes in the outer and plug welded it in then welded the gap up. Ground the welds down then sleeved the outside with 1/4 tube. Its overkill but i didn't have any scrap that was thinner.
Its 3/16" wall and 2.5" OD so its better than nothing. Going to weld 3/16 plate on the bottom of the actual hoop and bolt it to the floor. It attaches in 2 places to each pillar (one tab is getting bolted to the hoop) and the little support leg is getting a piece of 3"x3"x1/4" angle welded to it then bolted to the floor and to the crossmember under the front of the back bench seat. I'll have more pics tomorrow.
