Loading it up with house stuff to move to storage for the house sale, and it was clear and sunny (still chilly) out. So I pulled the dip stick and transmission fluid sticks and oil was low and really dirty. OIL CHANGE! Still not buying the 5,000 mile, so for the time being, I'll stick with the 3,000 mile changes.

I drove 5 hours nonstop up to the mountains and back home again about 72.5mph and 2200 rpm the entire way and the I6 ran like a top. Usually I get bored with things fast but I seem to love the Cherokee more and more every day.

Went ahead and exchanged fluid in tcase ,trans and changed oil and went with 6qts of Qstate Defy 10w-30 and I can say after a longer run last night I think the Defy performs better in my engine and sounds better than anything I tried yet like $80 Mobil1 oil change and a $15 Bosch filter. Lesson learned $15 jug of Qstate and a 99.9% efficient oil filter from Wally World is just fine.

Installed new catalytic converter in my 96 (at exactly 150K, mine was toast): new ...new
...
(liberally applied lol) ...and
('cuz everyone said to put it on the rear sensor threads) ...and yeah, those are all Amazon links 4 your convenience, but most of it can be picked up at your nearby Napa (only one who had a 2.25 inch band sleeve in stock) or O'Reilly, mostly for cheaper (oddly enough).
...and I'm fibbing a bit: this ended up being a weekend project, for various reasons: I got all the nuts & bolts & the sensor off without too much grief (TY PB blaster and suggestions for various CF threads), but the factory u-bolts had indented the tubes ...not a big deal on the front (cut-and-peel job), but the rear ...omigawd, I hammered for an hour or two lol. Hence the band-clamp in the rear. Never again LOL.
We drove it around a bit last night. The ching-ching-ching on engine start & off are gone. The exhaust is in generally quieter. This has always ran like a champ, and it still does. Dunno about mpg: taking it for a longer drive this after & will fill-up before & after to see if I'm doing better than the 14mpg it was down to.
