It's the most common Automatic transmission in XJ's, AX15 is the most common Standard transmission and is a 5-speed.

So there Aw4 np 231 or Aw4 np 242? Or is the Aw4 seperate from the 231 and 242 trans.

The NP's are transfer cases, not transmissions. They send power to the front axle. The NP231 is part-time only, NP242 is both part and full time.

Transmissions and transfer cases are separate... many are interchangeable...
