The D35 has a rounded bottom. It's okay on the street, but you don't want to run tires on it larger than 33" (or 31" with a locker).
The Chrysler 8.25 was also offered in XJs, and it's identifiable by the flat bottom. It's good up to 33" or 35" tires locked, depending on who you ask.

got a question for yall, my xj rear axle is welded for positive traction, what will i need to do to undo this? it was like this when i bought it.
