Took a stab at building a box for the back. It came out alright for a first try but need to improve upon it. I also grabbed some parts from XJ Wonders to continue the project.

Start by checking the linkage, the bushings are known to wear out, also make sure there is enough fluid in the transfer case and it is clean.

Then try this:
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

Dont tell my little stock baby, but I'm buying a better version of her tomorrow. Its a 99 with a 4.5" Rusty's lift, RC long arms, Rusty's front and rear bumpers, an engo 9000 winch, and a lokka in the rear. Absolutely insane deal for my area. Thank god for people who own too many jeeps! I'll post pics when I take delivery!

I fed my Jeep a Subaru today, 2015 Subaru Forester vs. 33x12.5 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R (Kevlar) literally turned into my back tire as I was passing, no damage to my Lil War Wagon, I think the tire won that round.
No, I don't lick fish.
Bought it a little friend.
Friend gave it to me. Was a parts bike to finish his iDrive. Mostly complete, just needs a couple of cables.
