Adding Yaesu FT8900R to my 2001 XJ
Well I am a ham operator (KG7ULY), and I decided to install a Yaesu FT-8900R transceiver permanently into the Silver Bullet. First problem was to get power from the battery to the main unit, which will be sitting under the passenger seat. I was puzzled as to how to get the power cables through the firewall on the passenger side. Then I found a huge grommet going through the firewall just behind the PDC. I had to move a couple of assemblies to get good access, but when I did and pulled out the grommet a bit, the way to the interior was clear and mostly unobstructed. I punched a couple of holes through the grommet ( it is large) and fed the power and ground wires (#14) through there and then fished them down into the passenger compartment right under the glove box. I connected the rest of the harness directly to the battery terminals using crimp lugs appropriate to the wire size, then soldered them just to make it a solid connection. So far so good. Took me a while to figure it out, but once I did, it was a smooth install. The wires are now down inside the passenger side of the cabin ready to be fished through the side walls and under the carpet to where the main box will be mounted. Tomorrow I take out the passenger seat and get the main box mounted. I ordered a Browning BR-180 2M/70CM antenna, which I will mount on the roof using a Browning BR-1010 NMO mount. I have already dropped the console and found that it will be super easy to drill the 3/4 inch hole in the roof and then fish the coaxial cable down to the main unit under the passenger seat. So I have power, and soon will have the antenna mounted and cabled to the main radio unit. In order to have easy access to the control head of the radio, I mounted it using a very nice device made by Panavise (In Dash Mount for Dodge & Jeep, 75106-194 ). This item bolts in very nicely on the right side of the stock radio and provides a perfect mounting surface for the FT8900R Head. It is installed and works perfectly. I only need to fish the remote cable down through the floor under the carpet and thence to the Main radio unit. I purchased a small speaker to mount near the head as well. The speaker wire also needs to be fished through the floor to the main unit. I expect this to be a clean install. More when the unit is fully operational and i will also put in some pics.

So it after buying a new group 34 battery, I discovered that the proper battery for a 95 XJ is a group 58. It had a group 34 battery in it because someone made a it fit. The battery hold-down was missing (always wondered about that) one edge of the battery try was sawed off to accommodate the longer battery. I didn't notice that detail last night because I was distracted by finding a heater hose bracket under the battery.

New brake pads, On the way home from work I hear a ...... Griiiiind.
Went and bought pads right away, installed them the next day, Caught it just in time. One little scrape on one rotor, other side was just about to do the same. I also have a new large C clamp for next time.

Finished the battery swap. Ended up putting the battery I bought today into the 99 XJ and moving it's 3 year old battery into the 95 XJ.
No, I don't lick fish.
Finally finished detailing the engine compartment after about 3 months worth of work. I've even got the engine block back down to the original black paint.
Now, if I can only figure out how to paint the axles without getting overspray on everything else, I'll have this project at 97% completion of my goal.

I lose all motivation.

How's traction in the mud with those red letters? I've heard nothing but good things about them and can pick them up for a good deal, just wanted to know how they compare in mud to an MT

For you (or anyone else in a similar situation), I would recommend getting some Meguiar's Super Degreaser and start at the top of your engine/bay with the cleaning part of the task. When you see how well this stuff works, your confidence will go up and you'll be more likely to want to finish the task, even if in stages. An old toothbrush can come in handy, too. Follow the directions on the bottle.
And don't let the price of the product scare you. Remember, these are concentrates so you can dilute to the desired ratio. I'd say start with an 80/20 to really knock the old crud right off. You can always follow-up with a weaker solution on a 2nd cleaning if necessary.
Then, when you're satisfied with the level of cleanness, apply some Meguiar's Hyper Dressing and step back and smile at what you've accomplished!
There are many benefits to having the engine/bay clean and once the initial cleaning is done, the next time it's necessary/desired it's so much easier and less time-consuming. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!
Disclaimer: I am not an employee or affiliated w/ Meguiar's in any way. I've used their products for years and have had great success and alot of compliments due to them and simply thought I'd share.
