With the Heep gone, I was able to focus my efforts on the '99.

First off yesterday was a new spare tire swing bolt. I had used the in-spare sub woofer, and had to saw the original swing bolt off to make it all fit snug. With my larger spare tire and matching 7" rim, I needed the full length of the bolt, so I found a new one on eBay. Also decided to ditch the sub, since it really worked best with the factory stereo/speakers. The aftermarket stereo tended to overdrive it, requiring the equalizer to be set with reduced bass to accommodate it. The Infinity Reference speakers produce acceptable lows on their own, without having to have the bass turned down to prevent distortion.

Next project, that I started way too late in the evening, was replacing my broken right side brake cable. Ended up having to open up the left drum to figure out how to put the brake back together. Tested and finished at nearly 3am.

Started off today with putting my new registration sticker on. Next, I put a pair of "corncobs" in for my brake/tail lights.

Final item for the weekend was getting my spare tire mounted to my matching 15x7" full face wheel. I had it mounted to a 15x6 wheel, which saved space, but after sitting and measuring it, the space saved was only 7/16 of an inch.

Spring for the roller ferrel and nylon rollers with winch plate..I had the exact setup and ruined my rope before I changed out..Great winch and I'll be buying another as I didn't have the "anti-theft" bolts and someone made off with it....GRRRRR. Oh well live and learn.

Thanks for the info. Had my son's last LED bar stolen off of his truck. Installed a new one yesterday. Welded the bolts to the FabTech bumper this time. Won't be stolen. I need to look into the anti theft bolts. That or weld them also.

Tack welding at least one of the nuts to the bottom of the winch plate is the old-school winch anti-theft system

1. Removed and cleaned out all of my coolant hoses.
2. Removed tranny cooler and took measurements to fab my own custom bracket.
3. Bought a ZJ clutch fan to install for greater lockup and greater airflow.
4. Moved bushings and nuts from old broken radiator to the new all-metal CSF 2-row.
5. Replaced cooling fan relay.

Just wrapped up replacing the output shaft bearing in my 242. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Lock rings are the worst. Let's hope this kills my leak AND the whirring noise! Filling with fluid and going for a drive!

A buddy had a breakdown with his 2001 XJ a little while ago, and we took a look at it today. With the cam sensor unplugged and just cranking the engine, you could hear a cylinder with poor compression. Gauge showed 100-130 across the board except #3 which would only get up to 90 and then immediately start losing whatever it had. Pulled the valve cover and the rockers on #3 are loose, so assuming a valve is ruined. Could be a cracked head. Could be a blown ring. No low-end noise and it did make some compression, so crank and rods seem okay.

The whole top end was covered in black tar and sludge like I have never seen except in commercials for top-end cleaner. Oil in the pan seemed alright but some metal. Coolant was pretty clean, no milkshake. All the spark plug electrodes were burned off, like they had a .050 gap, so I'm guessing that's where the metal come from.

He said lets pull it out and he'll figure out something to put back in, so we spent the rest of the day disconnecting stuff before we ran out of steam. Need to get E12 Torx for the transmission bolts, everything else is undone.

Yep, it's amazing how much of a difference they make and why they are often mentioned in front-end problem diagnosis.

I am looking at doing the same (living in Montana, no need for A/C) do you have a part number for the pulley and belt?

Replaced the power steering pump and the serpentine belt in my '01 Sport. Thanks to my neighbor who has a pulley puller, he saved a lot of aggravation.
Recharged the A/C on the '01 Limited, too.
