What did you do to your Cherokee today?
Well I took the jeep out last night and got her dirty, got to put the winch to good use, tried taking her through some tank trails in the area, and discovered I need more lift and bigger tires ha.

well 31s will only get you so far in mud trails
Took the Jeep down to OC, longest trip since front end swap and tires. Jeep handled perfectly, wish I had my beach tag so i could go on the beach.

I don't know why I ever did mud but reminds me of some of the crap I made it through but have no clue how. Now I hate mud and won't touch it.

There was a Toys for Tots drive / car show at the local Jeep dealership, 70 degree weather so I pulled the doors off. Then made a little detour on the way home
Oh I agree, 10 minutes of fun in the mud = 10 hours of cleaning up for me... I hate it to, but around my area there isn't much us around, you got mud or clay, or a lot of sandy trails... It was really the first outting for the ole girl, and we wanted to see what the limit was, now I know the limit for right now and gonna take it easy on her

Today I got productive and worked on my overhead console a bit... Disassembled it and covered the other shell I had already cleaned up with some blue leather, which came out ok... not fantastic but I learned a few things for next time. I also cut out the sunglass and garage door remote compartments and made an aluminum plate to cover this section. This will become a switch panel before too long. Wrapped the aluminum with some carbon fiber-embossed vinyl I had sitting around.

What did I do to my Cherokee this morning?
Work up early to check to see if I had to go clear snow. It had not started snowing yet. So I decided to wake up my daughter and we went to one of my favorite Open Space parks up in the hills to do some hiking. The pics. aren't that great because it was still dark when we got there.

Decided to put the steering box spacer today. Nothing was wrong with it but two bolts broke because the aluminum galvanized. So had to break apart the spacer and then pull two broken stubs inside.
I only used a 3 lb hammer, a cold chisel, and a vise grip. If u don't understand how I did this, then u have no business owning a jeep. Lol

Valve Cover Gasket
So, as a super noob (as you can tell from my post count) I have serious anxiety when I decide to turn a wrench on my jeep, a '99 XJ. Today, I started my multi-stage attempt to get my jeep to stop leaking engine oil from every possible crevice. I pulled my valve cover (cylinder head cover?) off and put on a new Fel-Pro gasket.
I happen to own a parts '98 XJ that was destined for the scrap yard. I started there. I pulled its valve cover off to see how difficult it would be, and because it's cover looked to be in a little better shape than mine. The valve cover on mine was ok but the oil fill cap would just spin. I think the threads in the valve cover were pretty much not there from being beaten up by "quick lube" geniuses. The oil fill cap off of the '98 XJ just spun in my valve cover, too.
Got that cover off, didn't break anything or lose anything (amazing but true), then started on the '99 XJ. Got that cover off, cleaned the s*!t out of the top of the head (the mating surface) and cleaned the bottom of the '98 valve cover. Changed out all the little rubber grommets and cleaned all the metal caps, re-installed that stuff on the cover and then lay down the gasket. I like the Fel-Pro because of its reputation, but mostly because it’s blue . Then I installed the valve cover. I torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. The factory repair manual I have says to torque to 133 in. lbs. so I converted to foot pounds for the 11. Started her up and had a little bit higher oil pressure (I think). So far, step 1 done.
I'm starting at the top of the engine and working my way down.
1. Valve cover gasket and oil fill cap - DONE!
2. Oil Filter Adapter: new O-rings and cleaned - NEXT
3. Timing Chain cover gasket and that front main seal (new timing chain at the same time)
4. Oil Pan gasket and Rear Main Seal
Is there anywhere else I could be leaking oil? Thanks!
That’s what I did to my jeep today!
