so it could be done, just have to know its in neutral before starting. I'm sure if you really wanted to make some safety device you could.

It's from Kevin's Offroad, replaces the radiator support, reinforces the frame, gives you a bit more clearance and gives you tow points tied to both frame rails instead of only one.

The only safety device on manual XJs is a clutch interlock switch - it does about half of the NSS's job. You'd have to build a new transmission that has switches to detect if a gear is engaged. (other than reverse)

Mine doesn't even have that... I looked all over for it when I had a sudden no-start issue thinking that the clutch pedal position switch had failed. Found no evidence of it ever being there and just removed by a previous owner, either.

couldn't you theoretically put in switches in that the shifter would press in each gear position that would be open when pressed so if the selector was in any gear it would break connection and not start?

It'd be a lot of fiddly fabrication, but theoretically, yes. I'm thinking a shift gate made of delrin (quiet, easy to shape) with limit switches arranged where any position forward or backward of neutral disconnects the remote start circuit regardless of what gear the transmission is in... just needs a slot for the shift lever to allow side to side motion since it only needs to track the forward/backward position to activate the switches... brb, drawing.

Yes, that is the theory behind all the fab work you'd have to perform to the assembly in the transmission.

Nope... I did so out of pure habit until one day I noticed it would crank regardless... Up until the time I went looking for the switch I'd just assumed someone had bypassed it, but I couldn't even find wiring or a connector for it. Between removing the security system that was on it and chasing turn signal issues, I've more or less been through all the under dash wiring.
