Been fiddling a lot myself, a little each day. I know, this is a 'today' thread, but in the past week I've:
Installed new U Joints in the rear
Took leafs apart and put back together correctly.
Did a bunch of hole patching.
Installed ONE factory towhook. Couldn't get the brackets for the other one because the donor Jeep was too crunched.
Installed Canyon wheels and 30" Wrangler GSAs with 60%-ish tread. $200 CL.
Did a bunch more hole patching.
Repainted both bumpers.
Wirewheeled and scrubbed entire undercarriage in prep for new undercoat.
Started undercoat rust treatment and priming.
Discovered frame is badly cracked in front of rear shackle mounts, both sides.
Formulated hairbrained scheme to fix frame cracks.
That's about it. I took the past week off to do nothing but drink beer and work on my Jeep... sounds like vacation to me.
I think this weekend, I'm going to start tackling my frame problem. Basically while goofing around trying to get my receiver off for undercoat, I discovered that the frame damage from a PO's rear end collision was MUCH worse than I thought. Basically, I can move the driver's side shackle and flex the floor by lifting up on the hitch with my hands.
In retrospect, I think that probably has a ton to do with the rear bouciness problem I've been chasing. If the shackle mount is moving the whole floor, that's a bunch of motion that's not being damped by the shocks.
So, my plan is to lift the receiver with an engine hoist to get the bumper and receiver straight and lined up again, then weld in frame reinforcement around the cracks. I'm also thinking about cutting the floor above the rails and welding in some box steel from the inside... but that's a weekend project, not a tonight project.

reinstalled the head, it starts and runs!!! but found out that the hydraulic lifters have been bad since before I purchased it :'( So now my newly machined head isn't getting any oil. Guess I have to pull the head again and replace the lifters. Anyone know of any write-ups with pics for replacing the lifters?
