Added a tailpipe extension to replace the piece aft of the rear hanger that broke off. Exhaust shop wanted over $500 to replace muffler and tailpipe (basically installing a cat-back exhaust) to fix this. Since the rest of the exhaust still looks pretty good I thought that was a bit extreme. So I picked up a 2-1/4" tailpipe extension and a new clamp at Auto Zone. The pipe was a little too long (18") so I cut off a piece with an angle grinder to make it even with the back bumper. Total cost was about $10 and it took maybe 20 minutes to install.

I'm sure at some point the muffler and pipe will need to be replaced. I found a video showing this job on a '99 Cherokee. Parts cost is about $150, but I'm not sure about spending this much time underneath cutting and grinding away, given my back, neck, and arthritis problems. So when the time comes I may just have to ante up the $$$ at a shop.

What I really need to do is learn to use this setup that a friend gave me some time ago...

Thank God Federal-Mougal products have stayed consistent with their quality.

Walker cat back exhaust install on 99 Jeep Cherokee - YouTube

Yeah 500 bucks, that's nuts! Exhaust shop near me only wanted $300 to install a brand new exhaust on my wife's car (Chrysler 300m). THAT entailed installing a Y-pipe (elimintaing the front resonator which is dual in, single out) at the front, new 2.5" pipe going from the collector into a new single in-dual out muffler, and then 2 curved tailpipes and rolled edge tips.

So for them to charge 500 bucks for a muffler and new pipe from the cat back is just ridiculous.

Hell, come to think of it, I had a full dual exhaust installed on my 1970 nova with two separate flowmasters for $300 - stainless steel!

It was actually a bit more and that's before adding state tax. I thought it was crazy, was expecting something more like maybe $300, after all this is a pretty basic exhaust system. (After adding sales tax the out-the-door price would have been close to $600. )

The main PITA for doing the cat-back myself looks like the way the muffler attaches to the converter. There's no flange like I'm used to on other vehicles where you can just unbolt it, so getting a rusted muffler detached looks like something of a challenge.

This patch job should hopefully be OK for a while. The extension slipped over a decent-sized section of good pipe. It looks like moisture and salt must have accumulated in the clamp and it rotted the original pipe at that point since the rest still looks OK.

Got the driver side upper ball joint off before the wife and kids got home. Tomorrow it's getting the lower off, installing both replacements, and then getting to the axle seals.

Another drain and fill of the tranny, that makes two. One more I think should do it.

Then cleaned the throttle body. Was fairly dirty below the butterfly. The throttle body itself wasn't on very tight at all.

Pulled my NP242 (again) because of some noise and heat issues on my last outing, found a ton of metal fur on the magnet and the chain is stretched enough that I could pull it off without removing the front output sprocket. It has new bearings and seals from a few months ago, but something overheated.

I have another NP242 from a WJ that is ready to go in, hopefully will get it installed today.

You really need to shop somewhere else for the work. The shop near me installed this muffler for $225 There was no way I wanted to do it myself. These guys have done work on three of my vehicles and do excellent work.

I did mine myself, but I was lucky because the PO put in a 2.5" exhaust (which I preferred) as opposed to the 2.25" from the factory. So all I had to do was change out the muffler (First for a straight pipe, then for a Thrush Turbo - next is an FM Super 40).

Agreed... ergo - what I did to my Jeep LAST NIGHT when I got off work...

3 Weeks ago, I purchased and put in a Carter unit... 2 weeks later - this was happening:

So, I finally narrowed the problem down to the fuel pump on wednesday night and had Rockauto.com ship me out a new Bosch unit next day express... it arrived yesterday while I was at work and I put it in last night:

MUSH MO BETTA!

Moral of THAT story is, if you need a fuel pump... BOSCH BOSCH BOSCH BOSCH BOSCH!!!!

Oh, just FYI, the wording on RA's site is a little confusing under the fuel pump heading... it had me thinkin' that I was buying a Carter kit w/ a Bosch pump. What the listing was REALLY saying was - Carter kit for vehicles originally EQUIPPED with a Bosch pump... not an actual Bosch pump.
