1998 Grand Cherokee w/4.0 & auto.

Steering box adjustment?

On the top of the steering box is a screw with a lock nut. This looks like an adjustment of some kind to me.

I would like to take and inch or so of play out of the steering wheel. Is there any problem with running that adjuster screw in a bit?

If not; how much do you think it might require? A 1/4 turn in? 10 turns in? <g>

Default is any one going to help or is this place u less

Help I have a 98 XJ jeep cherokee 4L Limited and am getting a grinding or maybe air going through a pipe noise behind the dash in different spots when I get to about 55mph and gets worst the faster I go. My air con seems ok the heat and cold seems to work and I can change the air flow to where I wont to the floor or to my face. I have just replaced the motor in it but only just got it so I don't know if it did it before or not. Thanks anyone in advances for your help

Default 1/4 only to the steering box as you need not over tighten it

you need only 1/4 of a turn at a time

This place ain't useless. I see from your post history you have asked this question about 5 times and created two threads for it. This isnt Jeep/Chrysler tech support at your disposal. This website is full of volunteers who help people all the time. You have waited a whole 4-5 hours for a response. Maybe someone who knows the answer to your question hasn't logged in and saw your post yet. Have patience and don't disrespect this forum.

So I installed the Putco wiring harness for the headlights yesterday, (I'm posting it here because there is no "What did you do to your Cherokee yesterday" thread), and I don't see why everyone raves about these things, I see almost no difference what so ever. It's hooked up to Sylvania Silverstar's...........which suck by the way, their light is scattered, very uneven although they do put out more light than the stock lights.

I didn't really notice any difference with my headlight harness either. Make sure the grounds you used are good.

Thanks. I'll try it and let you know what happens.

I really want to add positive castor to the front end adjustments and see if that doesn't sharpen the straight-line stability.

With race cars you set them up with less positive caster, especially for a short track, as the car is basically (slightly) unstable in a straight line. So it wants to 'dive' into a corner. And that's how this Jeep feels to me.

BTW: That is why you see dirt track drivers sawing away at the wheel in the straights. <g>

I think that tendency in this Jeep is what makes me feel like the steering is 'loose'. The actual 'play' in the steering wheel is only about 1 1/2" at the OD.

"grinding noise" and "air going through a pipe noise" don't seem like they could possibly be mistaken for each other. <g>

Bastard Pack install update. I couldn't decide between the s-10 or dakota spring pack to build the bastard pack with. Based on appearance and age of the vehicles, I ended up using the dakota spring pack. The dakota pack just looked healthier....they were. Built the packs and got them back under the xj and measured the new lift. I gained about 4 1/4". That's at least an inch more than I wanted. I think the dakota pack may have had a overload helper spring added to the bottom of the pack so I'm going to take the bastard packs back out and remove what appears to be the overload spring. I will update you all when I get that done. Might not be a one afternoon job. lol. And, it is NASCAR day. Happy Jeepin'

NASCAR? NASCAR is dead and gone! This crap aint real racing. All the cars have to exactly the same and the drivers can only drive a certain way. Its all about advertising.
End rant.

I have the same setup and no complaints. But the harness is designed more to keep from the headlight switch receiving all the power and melting.

Replaced the distributor and even though I marked the original spot it doesn't fire anymore. Pissed off at it. I took the old dist. out last week and replaced the gasket no issues and it started up. I replaced the distributor because the ear cracked at the mount. Marked it and swapped expecting to be a quick job.
