It's wrecked, it was 4 lanes wide, speed limit 60 mph, wreck on the far right side one lane blocked. I was cruising in the fast lane doing 50, the lane immediately to my right was cruising about the same. The lady in front of me saw the lights and the fire trucks and stopped dead in the fast lane and I hit her. There was no reason for her to stop, there was nothing in front of her, and nothing blocking the road. The damage is fixable, but I don't currently have the money or time to fix it. Bumper brackets were rusty and broke apart, bumper pushed into the fenders and bowed them, grill and header panel cracked, radiator busted, but as far as I can see no buckling of the frame or inner fenders or anything. I plan to fix it when I get the time/money.

If the bumper and brackets are the same as a xj, I got a bumper and brackets ill give you (96 and earlier style). Shoot me a text if you want them.

Yes, my passenger and I are both fine, no cuts or bruises or anything. Definitely needs a new bumper, but I'm hoping (probably won't be possible, but a boy can dream) that when I pull the bumper off I can get the fenders back straight. There aren't any creases, just gentle bows. It's really not that bad, but more than I have time or money for at the moment. I do have to say something though..... if that was close to 50 mph when you hit the crazy panic "deer in the headlights" driver in front of you... that would've been more than enough to completely total most newer vehicles on the road.
Just one more reason in the "plus" column for why Jeeps rock.

I don't have a picture handy, but the only visible damage was one side of the front bumper was pushed in about 3/4"

I definitely could've fixed mine, but I didn't get the option. I'm not discouraging your plans at all, so I apologize if my message was unclear. I was primarily replying to the notion that these old Jeeps are more resistant to damage than newer cars

It has always been a big concern for me with the older Jeeps like our XJs... because while they are a great 4x4 platform.... they are soooo undervalued by ins. companies that if it were to become totaled/stolen, etc. that it would be like a complete write off as you would basically get nothing for it.
Now we all know every vehicle out there depreciates rather quickly it seems.... but if you had say 7-10 grand into a build and something happened... then the ins company says... per book value... here's a check for $1500 bucks (if you're lucky)... have a nice day.
Hell.. it's like staring down the business end of a 12 gauge shotgun with the safety off.
I love my Jeep.. but some days and things like that do spook me a bit with it.
