What did you do to your Cherokee today?

Gotta love that old school solid front/rear axle tank style handling .... one of the many reasons I love mine.

Touched up a few little spots on the roof with some rattle can Stone White in between the monsoon rains here in AZ.
Then drove her around for a bit.... lol... does that count?

Pulled out the 22 year old tank, straps, bolts, pump, and filter. Took me longer than it should have, but went pretty well.
Pulling old straps out with a dremel cut.
Tank was about as bad as I thought it would be. Cleaner than I thought inside though. Probably could have lasted another season or two.

I got a reply from Automotive Authority about the Amazon ad. They said it's a mistake and that the inserts will fit a '96.

Anyone offer a poly replacement tank?

Don't recall. Dorman sells one you can get off amazon that has 3-5 gallons more space though, it's their replacement tank but I guess their dimensions are slightly bigger. Only issue people have is having the gauge say empty and have 5 gallons left.

I used the Dorman tank with the Dorman straps. Tank was $90 and had no fitment issues. It is about 1/2 inch narrower (left-to-right) than the stock tank, so it had no clearance issues with my existing hitch. It does carry 2-3 extra gallons as people have mentioned. My fuel level indications are slightly off now, but that is not a function of the tank as much as it is a function of the new fuel pump assembly and the default positioning of the float. If I had known in advance, I could have bent the float down a little to have a lower default position and helped to even things out. If and when I have the system opened for any future maintenance I'll make that adjustment. But I'm not re-opening the tank just for that. As it stands now, when I fill the tank completely, my gauge dial is right below the full mark on the fuel gauge, likewise, the dial can go all the way past empty to the left and still have about 3-5 gallons available.
When you do a job like this, after it is done, you are just happy if 1. There are no leaks, 2. Fuel pump and regulator operate correctly, and 3. fuel level indication works at all. (Most nightmare stories around fuel pump replacements revolve around those issues).
I didn't see a plastic/poly tank for a 96 xj available through my normal channels. I use plastics whenever I can here because of the salt we deal with.

Got the tank and straps from Amazon.
I think if the tank is filled right to the top of the filler neck hose it is good for about 24 gallons. I put 5 gallons in the empty tank, drove to the gas station and put in another 20 gallons. Allowing for at least 1 gallon of unusable fuel at the bottom, I think 24 gallons of usable is a good guess.

Went to take the trailer through inspection, flunked for no brake lights. Checked the connection with the plug tester and no brake lights. So when into the the left rear connections, only bad thing I found were the relays back there for the trailer connection. But found a weird problem, when you hit the brakes, the turn signal lights lite up too. All the grounds are clean. The head light switch was buzzing a couple weeks ago after turning off the lights, so I changed it and the stop light switch, no difference. Any ideas 01 Limited with tow package.
