That's the best solution, IMO.

Sprayed Fluid Film underneath to help retard rust. There was already a pretty good coat left from last year but I applied more, the stuff seems to work well. I've had this Jeep about 4 years now and while rust isn't terrible for a 20-year-old vehicle in the salt belt there is some. There has been no further deterioration with the yearly application of Fluid Film.

This is my favorite part about Fluid Filming.

Then I drive around and love the looks I get.

That stuff is one of those very rare "does what it promises" products.

Replaced front valve cover breather fitting with the correct one (returned incorrect one). Still can't find my plain heat shrink tube so using a clamp to keep hose on that end. BTW, on a 1996 XJ 242 it is hard to find that breather tube assembly. I used 17" of 9/16" rubber hose that fits good and snug on the air box and needs a little help on the breather fitting.

That old fitting was a bear to remove.
A pair of side cutters makes short work of it. Easy peasy. I can't imagine trying that with a utility knife. That's doing it the hard way.

Disagree. I used new diagonals and it was nothing that could be described as short work. Plus, the little bits falling into the engine are not calming events. Hopefully I extracted all of those and if I missed any they will end up in the oil filter before they lodge in something important.

Edit: Soaked the remnants of the old grommet in WD-40. The inner ring portion that the fitting seats against. Still hard as PVC. Silicone spray didn't seem to help either. Not sure if anything softens that material up.

When you say hard to find the breather tube assembly you talking about the hard plastic line or the rubber pieces at each end?

You mean dykes?
I did mine on the '96 I used to own with a utility knife. Sharp new blade, little at a time, and it maybe took 5 minutes.
Thinking using dykes would be awkward.

Yes.

And the hard plastic line with just one rubber end I found in a later model in a junk yard does not fit 1996. It has a bend in the hard line and a bend in the air box rubber end. Mine was a straight hard line, bent rubber end at valve cover (still have that rubber part) with a straight rubber end at the air box.

Stopped in a dealer a few years ago and the only part they had did not resemble what was original on mine at all.

9/16" hose works fine if clamped at the valve cover end. Still hunting for my regular heat shrink tube to put a layer of it on that fitting and have a snug fit each end. Guessing Teflon tape might work for that but not the best solution imho.

I would have bet money that they were all the same.
Just shows you.

After seeing pictures on here of people's heater core area and all the debris that gets in there, I checked into a cabin air filter but didn't really want to spend the money they were asking, so I grabbed a roll of filter media we use for refrigeration equipment coils. Cut it a little bigger than the louvered cover under the outside cowl and reinstalled the cover over the filter. Now that Fall and falling leaves has arrived I thought I'd check to see if it is doing it's job. So far so good.
