Thumbs up Head Gasket

Update on the head gasket replacement. Whoever designed the engine and exhaust manifold on the 2000 Cherokee can go eat my ***. Broke a bolt into my head but i recovered it without having to bring it to a machine shop, got the head resurfaced then i lightly sanded my block, through it all together and now it runs like a dream, alot of work but well worth it.

Finally had the frame stiffeners installed by a local shop. 13 hours, apparently there was a lot of rust. Looks great, and no more squeaking when I drive. $1700 well spent.

Now back to my inconsequential, cosmetic updates. Found an OEM fog lamp switch that required some minor rehab. Looks great down there—the eBay switch isn’t backlit. Oh, and I wired the fog light relay to the switch’s backlight power [instead of the battery]. That way, when the exterior lights turn on, the fog lights can turn on.

Went all summer without A/C. It only required a $20 recharge kit from Walmart. Done!

Finally an easy fix. Re-installed the rear brake light using screws/washers I keep loose in a box just for such occasions

So still waiting on an engine to show up here, and I know it will be about another week before it rolls up my street, So!

I decided to grind off the little studs that hold the front windshield trim on (going to 1995+ rubber trim), and since I need to paint there I decided to just shoot the whole roof of the XJ. Now if the weather can just hold out for another week or two, and hopefully NO snow till then??????
I mean..................... The window is totally cracked, and I know it is just a matter of time till I get pulled over for it.

Hopefully if it gets up to 66* or so I can shoot the primer on it??

I bought the KSuspensions fan shroud kit.
It needed just a bit of tweaking to make things right.

The holes for the fan were to small for the 10-24 hardware they sent with the kit. Then the holes for the fans did not even line up???
Also there are star washer indentions in the fans? Were they mounted on something else before I got them???

There are two structure braces on the radiator side that help keep it from flexing, but they used aluminum rivets, and they were not tight so the braces didn't do much for structural reinforcement. So I ended up drilling out the rivets, and using some stainless button head screws, and nylock nuts.

So I drilled out the holes for the fans and used rivnuts, keeping the 10-24 mounting screws.

The other thing I did not like, they sent sheet metal screws to mount the shroud to the radiator at the bottom, and then sheet metal screws to hold the top bracket on. Yeah not a good idea on aluminum and something that is gonna get a lot of vibration from the fans running.
So I again used rivnuts in those places.

So now I need to disassemble it, prime, and then paint.
After that the fans all get 2 pin Weatherpac connectors, and get wired into a painless fan relay/thermal switch system.

Got the roof, upper firewall Primed today. After it dried I brushed on some seam sealer. Will sand everything tomorrow with 400G, then see how it looks or if it needs more primer anywhere.
Before I did that I got the holes drilled for Rivnuts, that the THOR filter plate attaches.
Again I hate sheetmetal screws in a place that will need to come apart periodically. I ordered a few 5mm thumbscrews to hold the plate down.

I don't think your radiator is the issue. Here's a link from someone with some (not all) of your problems in an XJ:

It sounds like a ground/short issue. The only possible good news that it doesn't have the makings of a steering column clockspring failure.

Just got the Jeep back from the shop. $325 to replace the dead crankshaft position sensor. No fun when that fails without warning on the interstate.

Proceeded to swap out a leaky turbo on a 2005 Liberty diesel. Took about 5 hours. Both Jeeps run great now.
