Backlash and pinion depth set, have pinion bearing preload pretty close. Pulled it all apart and going to drill and tap the air line fitting tomorrow.

Aslo dropped the case spreader on my foot.

I know that I am the first person to point out if there are not pictures did it really happen.
So you are going to have to believe me.
Or not.
LOL.
Been having vibrations at normal highway speeds. Seems to come and go and might be dependent on the condition of the pavement.
Can't really call it a death wobble though.
But awhile back did hit some bumps on the highway doing about 60 MPH and got what I am going to refer to as a "baby death wobble".
Seemed to feel it was just the driver's side front when it did happen though.
Finally hooked up with my buddy, old boss at the Napa, and we threw it up on his lift.
Well everything checked out the best we can tell on the front end.
He was impressed at how tight everything was for 172K.
Tires seemed OK, no spun bands, and balanced. Driveshafts look good. U Joints, including front axles, looked good.
Steering box seemed fine. Wasn't loose like the spacer had busted or bolt or 2 had snapped.
We did forget to check the steering shaft in the engine compartment though.
He felt a weird resistance trying to hold back the driver's side front tire while the Jeep was running, idling, and they were spinning in 4 wheel drive.
So he started thinking brakes. Which of the zillion things that could be going on there had occurred to me too.
We pulled off the calipers, welded up the notches in the steering knuckles, regreased everything, and threw it back together.
Been meaning to deal with those notches for sometime now so glad that finally got done.
He said the calipers looked fine. We were able to press the pistons in without a problem.
Still a fair amount of meat on the pads and considering I replaced those and the rotors about 25K ago guess I can't complain.
But he is thinking I should buy new pads and rotors anyway.
So took it for a spin on the highway and the vibration was still there.
But I had to drive at about 85 to 90 MPH to feel it.
But it did not feel as bad as when it would happen at lower speeds so......
While not a Jeep guy he knows his stuff and thinking he might be right.
So I figure drive the Jeep for awhile see what happens but will probably end up buying new rotors and pads.
Thinking go for the ceramic coated rotors we sell with the good Adaptive One disc pads.
Did notice that my backing plates on the front were pretty rusted.
But my buddy was pretty amazed at how clean everything else was underneath.
We further discussed getting those Up Country leaf springs and the new shackles on.
Showed him the cavities both front and rear where that nut is welded to the inside of the uni-body that we can't get at.
Explained to him how they used the red Loctite from the factory there and lot of times they bust loose.
His response was "Yeah I own a blow torch. We'll get "em" off."
LOL.

Did you still throw heat on there first and still had to do that?
I forgot to mention this to him.
But awhile back I had this bad idea of drilling a hole, maybe 1/4", in that cavity.
Maybe it would let you get some heat through the hole right on the end of the bolt and nut in there.

Nah, just hit it with the impact the weld nut broke loose.
Grabbed it with a pair of vicegrips.
I already gave a pair of synergy replacement front mounts to him years ago so that's another project but we just put a nut and washer in for now so he can break in the new engine.

The hole isn't a bad idea, could also get some penetrating oil in there.

So recently picked up a set of xrc front and rear bumpers for 850 with winch bull bar and tire carrier. Cleaned them up a little and gotta shoot em up with bed liner. Also looking at an unfinished xj with 130000 for 2k that needs the rear suspension finished any thoughts it is an 01 and i did look into the head and it was checked and serviced and everything looks ok. Also my sister got her first jeep a 98 maroon xj with like 220000 that needs a little work got about a 2.5inch lift and 31s.

Today I took delivery of my new to me '99 sport. Next up is a thorough washing. Then time to formulate a plan. Probably start with the front axle swap. Currently it has a D30 disco installed for some reason. The PO included a regular HP D30. I figure I will build up the regular on the bench and then when it's ready to go, swap it out.

Is there any value to the disco as far as selling it? If not, I'm going to snag a knuckle and brake dust shield off of the disco since the non-disco is missing those on one side.

The knuckle is different on a disco axle.

So I can't swap the knuckle from the disco to the HP D30? Since it only has one, what brand should I buy? Is Dorman or Crown good to go? Rock Auto only seems to have APW and Ultra-Power. Never heard of those.

Oh, and does this mean that the fairly new hubs that are on the disco won't work either?

Yup. 90-01 knuckles are the same. 89 and earlier are different.

No local pick and pulls you can go to?

What about the hubs? Do I need to replace those also? I believe they are relatively new on the disco unit.

As far as pick and pulls, there are a couple in Indy I can go check out. I'm not sure I have the tools to take "remote" to remove them though. I'll have to think about that. I'm not sure it's worth the effort if I have to tear into a vehicle that is sitting on it's tires/wheels.

This is going to be a new adventure for me; finding used OE parts, figuring out the best online sources for replacement parts, etc.
