ABS was definitely available before 2001. I believe it was a option starting around 1988. It does always mean a d35 axle though.

There is a possibility the ABS pump is bad. Also if you completely drained the brake system you might have to find a dealer scan tool or an aftermarket scan tool that can cycle the ABS pump to bleed the air from it.

Not sure what the first year XJ was with ABS but definitely before '01.
I see the ABS pump in engine bay shots and automatically assume a D35.
If ABS and an 8.25 is a thing I have never seen one.

I was told that when I went to Tate in Glen Burnie to get it cleared on my 01. But also the brakes just revert to regular power brakes. I just pulled the relay in the pcm and light went out. Never had a problem with the brakes. Just the light.

My 99 didn't have ABS, but the cluster had an ABS light. Even though it didn't have it, my insurance company at the time gave me a discount because both of my vehicles had the option of ABS, so they qualified even without actually having it.

They never offered ABS with the 8.25, if you got ABS you got the d35.

That's Tate for ya. Tech obviously had no clue.

Replaced the radio in my 86 with a NOS stereo I had located. Previous owner of the vehicle had put a Pioneer CD player in it that would not turn off and lit up bright blue. Drove me crazy. Love the old school look now.

while "replace the whole system" comes off as extremely unhelpful there is a good reason for it. It's not a matter of IF the abs will fail but WHEN, That coupled with the lack of availability of major system compents (the ones that fail) make trying to maintain the system a losing battle.

Bedlined my interior last week. My OCD would have preferred to paint it the factory color but it was more costly and the bedliner will probably do a better job at sound insulation and maybe corrosion.

I did add some Kilmat in areas and then installed the carpet. Interior is starting to come back together.

Oh, and I also finalized the installation of 4 new speakers and a factory radio. Tested and all is well.

Can buy tintable liner (mostly clear on its own). We just went with fleet white tint and love it.

Replaced the driver side front door inner rubber weatherstripping. Way easier than I thought although a piece of trim on the bottom had to be sacrificed haha.

Understand, and agree on the 'not IF, but WHEN', as with so many things. That said, these brakes have worked well [stopped the Jeep safely] for 31 years so far and still do. We're ALL in a losing battle.

In my previous thread I should have said I was trying to keep this Jeep OEM, and was willing to tinker. Realize most of the Bleepin Jeepers are cutters, tapers, and swappers. That said - much like my first gen Honda Odyssey, my tinkering has created a very good braking system [non ABS] without pulling all the stock items and moving wiper fluid around. In comparisone, my 92 has the 'stock single diaphragm (?) non-ABS' system, and the 1991 [ABS system not working] brakes even better. Maybe I just got lucky and have the only 1991 Jeep that doesn't actually need the system to work....to stop well.

Where were you before I lined it! Not a big deal as my carpet covers it all up anyway.

But, if I had lined the bed of my truck I would have been disappointed. It is much too glossy for my tastes.
