What did you do to your Cherokee today?

Having previously removed the old pump today I installed the new water pump in my '99 XJ. No problems other than there's just a lot of stuff to put back together and limited clearance. Since I had to replace the one broken bolt anyway I replaced all the water pump bolts. Also installed the unused Dayco serpentine belt I had under the back seat as a spare and moved the old one (which is still in good shape) under the seat. I "burped" the air out of the cooling system and everything looks good with no leaks.

Yesterday, I drove it for the first time since I went on vacation in May. Only a couple of miles (from its secure parking to the the homestead, via a stop for fuel, as it was low & I really don't need to add running out to my problems). but enough to remind me how much I missed it. Now has a new battery, so won't have that will it/won't it start issue each weekend & the old one is on charge, just to see if it can be brought back to life.
However the turn signals seems to have failed while its been parked(& (as the hazards don't work either) I assume it's the relay. While I'm negotiating a price for a replacement, I thought that today I'd prepare for replacing it but I've hit a, not totally unexpected, snag: if, as I believe to be the case, the relay on a RHD model is still on the driver's side, how do I remove the plastic trim, when the hood release is where the furthest inboard screw on the lower edge would be?

I looked at my jeep, thought of all the work I need to do then walked away. I did lube the heim joints the other day at least.

Now it engages first gear properly. I guess the previous owner let the tranny fluid get quite low. Not much of a surprise since it was registered non-op since 2017. It is a fun adventure getting this old 1990 Cherokee back up and running. Over 300,000 miles and purring like a kitten. Now if I could only get it to pass smog! California emissions are tough.

Rear Hatch Latch Fix
This stock clips on 96-2001 XJ's known to slip. The rod is NOT threaded - these are rings - so a double nut solution Will not work. Tightening the metal clip will work for a little while - then you have to take it all apart again when it comes loose again
My fix: a 1/8" wire clamp to keep it in place

I ran a nut down mine, so it was kind of threaded after I got done Problem was that the clip couldn't slip, so in time it just started falling off instead
Someone at some time bought replacements that were actually threaded, and a replacement clip that was plastic and snapped around the rod. Seems like those would be better options.

It is amazing how much cleaner the bottom of the engine/trans will be now. I swore my RMS was leaking but doing the adapter o-rings fixed it! Using the VIM-HCT6-T60 super low-profile T60 socket made this an easy job. It's $13 on Amazon and will save you from stripping out the bolt. The Amazon photo for it is incorrect; see the reviews for the actual photo.

Put gas in the tank, go wheeling and enjoy your jeep.

Adjusting your kickdown cable takes 30 seconds and might make a noticable difference.
They say replacing the power steering spacer is a budget mod you should do if you are over 31s but I'm afraid the bolts will break and I'll have to buy extractors.

Where you wheel your XJ could guide you - if your mostly in mud in the South or Midwest, your needs would be a little different from someone in the West on rocky trails. However, an Up-Country skid plate kit will offer you a little protection and peace of mind

trying to find out why it wont start. Acts like the battery is low. Tried jumping it, goes to start and can hear the drain of the power going out. Put a new battery in it, same issue.
